The bestselling book by one of the 21st century’s most innovative and exciting spiritual thinkers

With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived "in the now." In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

A New Earth was an Oprah Book Club pick and reads as a traditional narrative, offering anecdotes and philosophies in a way that is accessible to all. Illuminating, enlightening, and uplifting, A New Earth is a profoundly spiritual manifesto for a better way of life—and for building a better world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple Awakening Advice Through this book, I was made aware of my own ego. It gives a good advice which every person must recognize his-her own ego : be conscious. This causes some calmness inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changing This book changed my life....without a doubt it helps you understand why people do the things they do - EGO. This concept alone will change the way you process information. I don't think everyone will be ready for all the information in this book....but worth reading it and finding out! I know for sure I will be revisiting it from time to time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read! This has been the most empowering book I have ever read in my life. The first 30 pages or so, I was not into it at all, thinking I should probably stop reading. However, once I hit the chapters about the ego and what the mind does to us, I was hooked. It is written with simplicity and elegance. There are lots of great references by great meditation leaders, as well as some biblical passages that I never understood the meaning of until now. This book has definitely changed my life, I am so glad my friend borrowed this book to me - I will definitely be buying it and re-reading it multiple times.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thought-provoking I started to read this book around the time it was featured on Oprah, and I thought some of the concepts were interesting, but I lost focus in the book at the time. I will have to read this again and finish it...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the greatest... I picked up this book because of the rave reviews and the heavy promotion by Oprah's webinars on the book with Eckhart Tolle. I found the concepts 'interesting' but I wasn't very moved by the message and I found the writing to be very redundant. All in all, a difficult read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changing Life changing read. Eckhart explains experiences that I feel and go through but could never put into words myself. I now understand myself so much better. I now know why I have certain thoughts and how to deal with them. I used to feel crazy and alone sometimes, particularly when I'd have a little voice inside me that I would argue with. Now that little voice has a name, ego... and that is not who I am. Everyone has one, I'm not alone and I'm not crazy. I now know how to deal with it. It has been over a year since I've read the novel and I am soooo much happier; but I still have a lot more to learn. A book I would definitely read over and over again and recommend to others!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great & Out there! I purchased the audio cd's of this and some parts were very valuable and other 'out there'. Perhaps beyond my thinking capacity because I know a lot of people loved it. The first cds were slow - and then it picked up. Valuable info and somewhat odd yet it has sold 10's of millions...had to get use to his voice too. Worth a listen for sure - confused by much , left me with more questions than anything. Nice intention - much prefered the Now book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic book - A must read! This is a book that everyone should read. Helps to deal with true reality and shows how to put into practice ways you can live a better life. Difficult daily relationships and tasks can be transformed into learnings. Is this difficult to do? Maybe it is but it is worth it. Be positive and realistic about life and what happens in your life. I am practicing what I have learned and I can tell you that it works wonders! As with everything in life.....Be persistent and you will succeed!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too much hype Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book. Though this book had to much hype and my expectations were too high. It makes you stop and think, but I can list a dozen other titles that have the same basic message...this isn't anything new..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are. Far more in-depth than "The Power of Now" as far as content goes but Eckhart does a good job focusing equally on how to live peacefully in the world and with ourselves in potentially critical times. Very helpful techniques and coping strategies but alot to digest. A good way is to sift through the sections slowly and take what you can out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Skip the first chapter please!! This is an excellent book! I was warned that the first 30 pages were difficult but to try and get through them. I'm glad I was warned because I would not have gotten through the first chapter otherwise. I recommend starting at Chapter 2. This is not a book to be rushed through! Just take your time, think about it and let it sink in. You may not agree with everything the authour says, but that's ok, you don't have to! There is still much to be gained from reading it. It is written with a lot of humility and you will quickly see how it applies to your life (and those around you). I am a Christian and I realize that many Christians would not like this book since it is very Hindu in its philosophy, but I wish they would read it anyway because it provides the best definition and explanation of the soul and life in the flesh vs. life in the spirit that I have ever read. It has helped me to relate to certain aspects of Christianity in a deeper way--particularly dying to self, suffering and our true eternal nature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Those hovering at the brink of the "ah ha" moment Eckhart Tolle has done an incredible job of articulating intuitive concepts that many have yet to acknowledge even exist. If you've ever had that moment of stillness as your mind is racing through its endless barage of thoughts and you stopped listening to it long enough to wonder at its relentlessness - then you will likely appreciate his insights as they will help you pay tribute to your true self as opposed to that chattering script in your head. For those who identify themselves as one with that voice and have no idea what I'm describing - this book may not be for you - yet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expand Your Perspective A former boss bought the book for all the staff in our small office. I followed along with Oprah's online class and found the concepts really helped me understand things, personally, and globally, from a new and broader perspective. I'll probably need to read it a few more times to really 'get' it though. Overall, I would say it's an encouraging book and a great read if you want to expand your understanding of yourself and the world (and yourself 'in' the world).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What struck me about A New Earth I mentioned in one of the Ireland posts that I was reading and then listening/watching the podcasts/webseminars on each chapter that Eckart and Oprah hosted throughout the spring. If you have/do read the book I would suggest listening to the discussions. Real people called, emailed, skyped in with questions that made it come to life further. It's an amazing body of work and you can see how it links religions, spiritual philosophies etc. So I just thought I would share some of the things that really struck me. 1. I never did know what exactly the ego was and it turns out that it's the source of much unhappiness in all of us if left unchecked. It's the often constant voice in your head, going over the same things, over and over again. It's the part of you that's obsessed with the past and the future and needs conflict to exist. If you're feeling insecure or superior, both are the ego. Wow, this was a monster for me. Ekhart wants you just to notice that kind of thinking, I think of it as waving it hello, so it can't sneak around unnoticed. That means you're not held hostage by those thoughts as much. You have some distance and perspective about the litany of complaints, injustices and things to worry about. 2. A thought is just a thought. It's not necessarily true. It's not necessarily who you are. It really isn't all that powerful. And the bugger of it is, your body can't tell the difference from a truly threatening situation and a horrible thought. Think how you feel when you wake up from a nightmare. So all the stress we dump in unknowingly to our body by what we think.... Yikes! No wonder they say stress is the cause for 99% of all illnesses. So if you notice a negative pointless thought, like how you got stood up by your grade 10 boyfriend, just notice it. And over time it will come less often. 3. If you can live in the present. So right now you're reading the computer screen. Are you also listening to music? or is your phone ringing? Do you feel some stress or anxiety but aren't quite sure where it's coming from? Are you thinking about what you have to do after you read this? Clearly I'm just guessing, these are things I might be thinking. The kicker of it is, if so, then it means you're living somewhere else rather than reading this. And while my blog isn't much to miss out on; there are all kinds of things in our lives that it's a real shame to miss. When the voice in the head hijacks us we don't get much peace. And we need some peace to know how we feel inside. To really listen to someone. To give the present moment your attention. To do things we feel good about. Just wanted to give a bit more background on what I think could be a life changing read. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Fabulous (5 Stars from me) This book is great! very inspiring. If you allow yourself to surrender to new concepts you will see this is what was being said in the "Dharma" hundreds of years ago. A Concept that science has been "UNABLE" to prove as wrong. I suggest to all who "don't get it" perhaps it is your ego that is not allowing you to surrender. Or as the western society terms it your "darkside"

Rated 1 out of 5 by from If you could ignore the bad writing... there may be some worthwhile insights in this book, however, I could not get past that aspect. Gave up after 30? pages or so - it was like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A Very Hard Read I tried and tried to read this book, but I just can't do it. My mind wanders, I think about other things I could be doing and can't wait for each chapter to end. I just can't get past the bad writing. I understand the author has a lot to say, but he puts all these ideas in one long sentence (run-on sentences at that!). He has too many ideas in each paragraph. It gets confusing very quickly. I cannot finish this book. I usually love Oprah's picks, but this one is not my thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from True inspiration! Eckhart Tolle is a soft spoken, gentle human being, but his words and insights pack a powerful wallop! Were every person on the planet to read this book and so alter their view of what life is truly all about, humanity would be well on its way to evolving to a higher state of consciousness. To become a part of the solution to the problems of life on this earth, rather than being part of the problem - "A New Earth" helps to point the way for all of us, on how to become better human beings, and how to live our lives with the true joy that is waiting to be discovered within the heart and soul of everyone of us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An awakening experience This book is the biggest eye-opener I have ever experienced in my life. It's been a month that I finished reading it and I'm still digesting some of the parts of the book. My relationships have changed all around me (boyfriend, co-workers, parents, sister, friends, etc.) To sum it up in one sentence, I have discovered what it means to be happy and at peace with the cards that life has dealt me. I am no longer jumpy and stressed out, I don't dramatize my life experiences, I have a clearer mind and I am more self confident. Everyone needs to read this book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Its taking me forever to finish ..... I bought this book in the beginning of March and I'm still not finished .Oprah says that its a great book if you are ready .Well I'm ready and I certainly get some of what Eckhart is saying but I just wish he would explain or give examples of what he is trying to say .This is why I think Oprah has this class because you will get lost if you dont join . I am a member of Oprah's on-line course but its so long and boring at times .I cant down the book totally because there are certainly smart and real portions to this book but I will ,like one of the other reviews said but it down and return to it later on .Its a tuff but at times moving book .There are some real ah ha... moments but it takes time to sink in . Thank-you from my ego.... ; )

A lot of words you don't normally come into contact with on a daily basis. But.... if you are ready, if you are looking to be more positive, looking for enlightenment - this book will not disappoint. Be persistent - it is incredibly rewarding! My entire extended family is now reading it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truth I just started to read this book and was so happy to realize that I am this book. I am 61 years young and it took a lot of hard work to get here. I have to say to anyone who doesn't believe is that, this book is "truth". I had never heard of this book until the "Oprah" show. I am so happy that Eckhart Tolle has written it. because it is going to set things right for so many. Even though I am finally a"conscious being" I am still going to participate in the workshop. Thank you Eckhart Tolle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Uplifting and Inspiring! Having Oprah Winfrey say, "Your book is my book club pick" epitomizes a leap in success. It's certainly the dream of almost every author I know. For one Canadian author it's a dream come true. Vancouver-based author and spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle must feel like he's riding a wave. His book A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose is Oprah's 61st choice for her book club. Oprah is hugely responsible for Tolle's earlier rise in fame as she launched his 2005 book The Power of Now, skyrocketing it to a million-copy bestseller. Tolle's A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose is a fantastic book for anyone who is looking for some illumination on life. Many of us want to change, yearn to better ourselves or grow to our fullest potential, yet we have no idea HOW to do this, how to find our life's purpose. We are living on 'ego', surrounded by stuff and are unconnected to who we really are inside. If you are a reader who really thinks about what you're reading, you'll find some clarity and direction in this book. I found it to be very uplifting, hopeful, thought-provoking and reaffirming. I think any book that can affect a person's thoughts or life as Eckhart's books have done deserves to be read with an open mind and heart. As in The Secret, I found many similarities in the messages in this book and I wish I'd read it years ago. Tolle's writing is quietly blunt and often lyrical, and always honest, as he sees life. I recommend this book for older teens, especially those graduating and moving into the work force. It is also great for any adult, especially those looking to make changes in their lives, whether in relationships or careers. In many ways, I found it to be a philosophical study of how to 'let go' of old ways of thinking. This is a book about making every minute of your life count for something--being authentic, which reminds me also of Sarah Ban Breathnach's Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self. I am also pleased to see that Oprah has selected another Canadian author. As a Canadian novelist myself, this brings me some hope. After all, I've discovered that one of my life's purposes is to write novels that make people think. What's your life's purpose? ~Cheryl Kaye Tardif, bestselling author of Whale Song, a novel that will change how you view life...and death http://www.cherylktardif.com
