about

From New York Times bestselling author Jennifer A. Nielsen comes a stunning thriller about a girl who must escape to freedom after the Berlin Wall divides her family between east and west.

With the rise of the Berlin Wall, twelve-year-old Gerta finds her family divided overnight. She, her mother, and her brother Fritz live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home. Gerta knows it is dangerous to watch the wall, to think forbidden thoughts of freedom, yet she can't help herself. She sees the East German soldiers with their guns trained on their own citizens; she, her family, her neighbors and friends are prisoners in their own city.

But one day, while on her way to school, Gerta spots her father on a viewing platform on the western side, pantomiming a peculiar dance. Then, when she receives a mysterious drawing, Gerta puts two and two together and concludes that her father wants Gerta and Fritz to tunnel beneath the wall, out of East Berlin. However, if they are caught, the consequences will be deadly. No one can be trusted. Will Gerta and her family find their way to freedom?

Jennifer A. Nielsen is the acclaimed author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Ascendance Trilogy: The False Prince, The Runaway King, and The Shadow Throne. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. The Berlin Wall seems to be a topic that gets "forgotten" about, and I picked this one up not quite knowing what to expect. It started out slow, but definitely picked up the pace. By the time I got to the end, I couldn't stop reading, and yes, cried.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read for (almost) any age. I'm in my 30s and read anything I find about WWII, Holocaust, Nazi Germany, the Berlin Wall, etc. This is definitely geared towards older children but was a great read for an adult as well. I probably wouldn't read it with a child under the age of 9 or 10, but older kids and even teens would be able to connect with the main character, Gerta, and her brother, Fritz. It tells the story of the Berlin Wall in a way that makes it real and understandable to kids but doesn't scare them. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read This book is great for anyone who is interested in what it was like to live during the time the wall was up. Greta is a very strong willed young lady and you feel for her and how frustrating it is to be told you can't think or do things you want. Nice to see a strong female character who grows as the book develops.
