The Whittakers are shocked when Meddie, their nanny, suddenly disappears without giving notice.

Hired temporarily by Arnold Whittaker after his wife, Bernice, has a difficult delivery with their first child, Meddie proves to be so good with the baby and capable around the house that they can't believe their good fortune at having found such a perfect nanny. They keep her on and are delighted that she shows as much devotion when their second daughter is born.

Meddie lives with the Whittakers for over twenty years, taking care of the house and the girls. Arnold and Bernice think of Meddie as part of the family, so when she disappears they are puzzled and upset. Not only was Meddie a perfect nanny and housekeeper, she always seemed to know what was going to happen before anyone else. That's what makes her quick departure even harder to understand. Where has she gone and what does she know that she isn't willing to tell them?

A PERFECT NANNY is the introductory short story in a series of Giffort Street Stories in which the characters move from story to story as naturally as they would in any neighborhood.
