NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The heart-wrenching, uplifting tale about a woman named Cupcake

“[Cupcake] Brown’s confessional . . . memoir is one you can’t easily put down. Her life is nothing short of a miracle.”—Chicago Sun-Times

*There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, and homelessness.

Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she’d even turned twenty.

And that’s when things got interesting. . .*

Orphaned by the death of her mother and left in the hands of a sadistic foster parent, young Cupcake Brown learned to survive by turning tricks, downing hard liquor, and ingesting every drug she could find while hitchhiking up and down the California coast. She stumbled into gangbanging, drug dealing, hustling, prostitution, theft, and, eventually, the best scam of all: a series of 9-to-5 jobs.

A Piece of Cake is unlike any memoir you’ll ever read. Moving in its frankness, this is the most satisfying, startlingly funny, and genuinely affecting tour through hell you’ll ever take.

Praise for A Piece of Cake

“[Brown] reflects now with insight and honesty on her experiences. . . . An engaging account . . . of a remarkable life filled with pain and wisdom, hope and redemption.”San Fracisco Chronicle

“Dazzles you with the amazing change that is possible in one lifetime.”**—*Washington Post ***

Rated 4 out of 5 by from interesting and shocking memoir from child to adult. she goes from drugs (trying, addiction and dealing), prostitution (as a child and teen), gang activity, various criminal activities, sexual assault, abortions and anything that relates to the dark and revolting side of adults abusing children.  a compelling story about a girl's journey to becoming a successful lawyer. what cupcake goes through is what we as adult shield our children from.  i can't say this is a good story, because it truly sickening and sad. though the child services and judiciary has changed since the 80's it is still hard to believe how one child was able to come out of the ashes to become a successful and prominent lawyer.  you will be completely shocked what she goes through and never forget this story. you will learn to appreciate your life.

The author has gone through every imaginable obstacle and her long, strenuous, moving journey is completely shocking to read and unfathomable to most people. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not so much of a piece of cake The never ending problems this woman struggled through her life are unbelievable, I struggled to read the book myself, thinking how is she going to make it out alive. But I made it, i read through her suffering. This book shows us that in life you do need support around you, and that you can overcome horrible addictions and you can get pass the bad things life throws in your face. Half way through the book I had to stop reading it for a week, because my brain and heart could not take it anymore, It is funny how things come at you , testing you to see if you are going to mess up, and you would think, okay now this woman will learn from her past experience and chose a better way, but she didn't she would fall right back, but how can she go to a better way, when she doesn't know what it better, or doesn't even think she deserves better, very sad, heart-rending but good read all the way. Don't ever give up and you are not alone

Rated 5 out of 5 by from inspiring I loved this book and I normally hate reading, so it has to be good to keep my attention. The author shares the story of her childhood and troubled youth getting into drinking and drugs at 11 yrs old and by her own will power overcomes it all. An incredible story, I highly recommend reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspiring I love to hear about people who have overcome hardship and beat the odds. Cupcake Brown did this. Despite the many people who entered her life that told her she would amount to nothing and despite the people who entered her life who did what they could to hold her back, she began to love herself and see that she was worth something and did have a large amount of love, courage and happiness to share with other people. The system failed for Cupcake and I'm so glad she has written her story so people can see what happens to children when the system fails. Unfortunately, it fails many children and families. It is stories like this that will hopefully help change the way things are done so that others will not have to experience the same things Cupcake did. This book is very raw and real. It is emotionally difficult to read, but very well written. I highly suggest this book to anyone in the chld welfare system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shocking. This woman is incredible - had I not lost the book when I was at the last chapter, I would have been grateful. Cupcake Brown is a remarkable woman, everyone should know this girls story. Absolutely everyone. It shows how young of an age you can start drinking, drugs, and sex. It's still todays reality, sadly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best I have read alot of memoirs and this is one of the most shocking. There were so many times that I thought, "Oh my gosh, this really happened!". It was really good with illustrating the hardships that people face in their lives but that you are alwasy able to bring your head out of the water. I found the beginning really intriguing, but like most memoirs, the end starting to get a little dragged on and boring. But OVERALL, it was worth the read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable! This book will shock you, touch you, make you cry, and make you laugh, but best of all, it makes you think. This just goes to show how a little bit of determination and hard work can get you where you want/need to be. Her insight, honesty, and ability to make you feel as though you are experiencing all things great and evil, is a thing of great beauty. This book has greatly impacted my life, and I am glad that Cupcake was willing to share her story with us. I have never been more inspired.
