Based on Paula Todd's widely viewed television program Person to Person, an intimate biography show about human behaviour, A Quiet Courage shows us that it is often ordinary people who have something extraordinary to teach us.

Todd explores the unique ways twelve fascinating men and women from around the world not only survive the unimaginable, but manage to thrive afterwards, including: an artist whose family is murdered; a sales clerk diagnosed with colon cancer who is given six months to live; an award-winning chef who is paralyzed in a car accident and is told he will never be able to cook again; a paramedic who suffers from critical incident stress disorder after discovering a murdered rape victim who closely resembles his fiancee; and a senior police officer who suffers clinical depression after investigating some of Canada's most notorious murderers, including Paul Bernardo.

A Quiet Courage is an inspirational book about overcoming the worst life has to offer, deriving strength from tragedy, and learning from the experience. These are revealing, compelling stories about the exceptional courage of everyday heroes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Respect Paula Todd should not use concepts she does not understand. Jeffrey Mitchell and his colleagues have spent 30 years working on a management system, CISM, which helps people to manage critical incident stress. A major intervention is the CISD, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing. Paula is one of those people who wants to change the meaning to critical incident stress disorder. There is no critical incident stress disorder in the approved diagnostic categories of the DSM so Paula Todd is creating a new disorder by have errors in her book. This is not to diminish the experiences of people in her book but to draw attention to the error of this book as this error influences all who will read the book and has also now appeared in a book by Morrissette who is writing on traumatology and perpetuates the same errors. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Quiet Courage by Paula Todd This book is a manual for living a great life. I gave it to a friend who was having a hard time -- boyfriend, job -- you know ... and she just changed her attitude over night. The people in this book have the most amazing way of looking at the difficulties we ALL face and they make you see that you can make it and you are a lot stronger than you think, Thank you. p.s. It is really well written too -- great story-telling. Top marks,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Inspiring Whenever I read a book I look for ways in which it relates to my life and to the lives of those around me. In many of the achievers that Paula wrote about I saw parallels to my own life and the lives of people that I have crossed paths with. These stories encouraged me to reflect. I found that they made me re-visit the big question: “What is the meaning of life?” A partial answer seems to be to try your best and to help others along the way. Paula’s book helps to add meaning to our lives by bringing these life stories to us. The stories, in turn, encourage us to rise above the challenges that we face and to improve our lives and the lives of others.
