David had nothing else to have prevented his cutting of Saul, but this consideration, he might have done it with all safety; for the only religious sanction he could apprehend any thing from in this cafe, was Saul's being anointed by Samuel; and as our historian assures us, that Davidvtas also anointed purposely to supersede the other Lord's anointed, viz. Saul; he had equal reason to expect, from the people's regard to religious sanctions, that he should avail himself as much of them, as Saul himself could do; and that being anointed to supersede Saul, he should be favoured and assisted by the people, in all the methods he thought necessary to hasten and secure his succession; as he and the priests might have pleaded a religious sanction for doing it. CHAP. IV. The Historian's remarks on the character and conduct of Saul considered. OU R author observes, that upon Saul's obtaining the kingdom , he had the Spirit of the Lord given to him, which we find taken away again, when he proved untractable, tho' it seems somewhat odd, that he should prove disobedient, whilst he acted under the influence of this divine spirit. The passage of scripture, on which he founds this odd observation, contains the words of Samuel; who when he dismissed Saul, after having anointed him king, foretold him f: The Spirit of the Lord shall come upon thee, and thou shalt prophecy with the prophets, and shalt be turned into another man: i. e. shalt no longer consider thyself as a private person, but find thyself inspired with the spirit, the sentiments and fviews of a king. And accordingly the history observes, that when he was gone P.
