Rated 5 out of 5 by from “Once a guy stood all day shaking bugs from his hair.” Published in 1977, this story tells us of an imagined future taking place in Orange County, California in 1994. It follows an undercover police officer who is tracking the distribution of a new drug, Substance D, that is taking over the country and causing people to lose their perception of reality and in some cases, die. Our protagonist, who goes by his undercover name Bob Arctor, poses a drug user and lives with fellow junkies in his Orange County house in an attempt to infiltrate the dealers. However, Arctor may have gone too deep, as he too becomes addicted to the Substance D. The story deals with theme of alternate personalities as Arctor is increasingly questioning who he is as the drug begins to take hold of him. He is torn between the question of if he is an undercover agent about to bring down his only friends or if he in fact has become the very type of person he was employed to bring down. This is a very insightful and prolific novel as Dick uses his real-life experiences to convey the lives of people who fall victim to drug addiction. With many thought provoking passages and interesting twists, the book is sure to keep you reading until the end, and proves to be another Philip K. Dick classic.
