about

The lives of ordinary people become intertwined when a gunman takes hostages at a women's clinic in the #1 New York Times bestselling author's latest.

At Mississippi's sole remaining women's reproductive services clinic, a gunman bursts in and takes its patients and staff hostage. The stories that brought these individuals to the clinic vary, from a woman awaiting cancer screening results to a protestor hoping to catch the clinic in a scandal that could be used in a pro-life campaign. Then there is the police hostage negotiator, whose daughter is also trapped inside the facility, and the gunman himself, who has a vendetta to carry out. Meanwhile, across the state, a seventeen-year-old woman lands in the hospital after an attempt to self-terminate her pregnancy and is subsequently charged by the pro-life DA for the murder of her unborn child. They, too, are connected to the events unfolding in the clinic.
As the book moves backward in time, each chapter set one hour earlier than the last, we learn how all these people and their stories are unwittingly connected--and that none of these characters' reasons for being where they are at this fateful place and time are exactly what it appears at first glance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwrenching until the very last page I agree it was a bit confusing when I first began the novel in the way that it was backwards, but regardless an amazing novel. Hit close to home. Anything written by Jodi is marvelous.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tough Subject This was a struggle for me to get through. She always writes about these powerful subjects, and does a good job. I can't say I loved the story. But it was well written. I went in blind on this one, so it was a bit of a struggle to get through. Not to mention the backwards story line had me confused.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very hard book to read- wouldn't recommend The story going back in time is very difficult to read and made it quite boring. Jumping around between the characters was difficult while following along in this reverse order story. the "climax" of the book had nothing to do with the hostage situation. it was a good plot twist but not worth the boring chapters i read to get to it. You also don't know what happens with the hostage situation which was so disappointing. probably Jodi Picoult's worst book. sad to say that/

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Captivating! I really enjoyed this book. The different characters and views, it going backwards with time was interesting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thought Provoking I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was a really thought provoking read. It was interesting to read about this subject from the differing perspectives. I found the format a little tough to get into though with it going backwards in time. The ending was great but there were a few story lines that I wish she had elaborated on at the end...I felt really invested in the characters and wanted to know how their stories turned out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All the stars! Thank you Penguin Random House Canada for gifting me a copy of this incredible book by the ever so talented, Jodi Picoult. This title released October 2. All the stars from me for this one, hands down a very emotionally charged book. A group of unlikely women find themselves in a terrifying situation when a gunman opens fire at a Women’s clinic they are each attending for some reason or another. Their day starts off like any other, one woman going into work at the clinic; another attending with her aunt to obtain birth control; another going undercover to bring down the only clinic in the Mississippi area and finally one woman there to terminate her pregnancy. Each woman has her own story on how she got to this clinic and for what reason. I won’t discuss any more of the actual plot in order to avoid spoiling it for new readers. But seriously, this is one book you need to add to you TBR list if it isn’t already. Despite what some people may think when first reading the synopsis of this book, it’s not all about abortion but rather, about the choices people are often faced with and which ultimately shape their future. I understand the mixed feelings initially toward this book, as it is a heavy plot dealing with highly sensitive topics: abortion, women’s rights and shootings. But the reality is, these are not foreign issues today and it is important to discuss them as best we can in order to bring awareness. This book gave me all the feels. Being told in reverse, you know what’s happened without knowing how it happens until you get deeper into the book. My nerves were completely shot during this read. In true Jodi Picoult fashion, she pulled at my heartstrings with this story. Told in reverse and in multiple POVs, this book was engaging right from page 1. The story begins at the end of the shooting and ends with how it all started. An interesting writing style, which I quite enjoyed as it kept me guessing and more importantly, turning the pages! Whether you are pro life or pro choice, this story will shock you in more ways than one. I was a complete roller coaster of emotions during this read and still can’t get over the ending. Well done Jodi Picoult, WELL DONE! Already looking forward to her next masterpiece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another favourite from Jodi Picoult I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.* Jodi Picoult has done it again. I am in awe at how she can take such polarizing topics and write characters' stories in such a way that you can at least understand where they are coming from, even if their thoughts, beliefs, opinion are the complete opposite of yours. This book is about two extremely timely subjects: reproductive rights and (to a lesser extent) gun control. As you can imagine, those subjects make for a heart-wrenching story, but one that I was unable to put down. 5/5*
