Excerpt from A Study of Response to the Houston, Texas, Fireworks Explosion

This study deals with the cues and the processes of percep tion and judgment, and the methods of communication which people of Houston, Texas, used to decide what had happened when a fire works warehouse exploded on June 5, 1953. We believe that the data on these questions will be of value to agencies and research workers concerned with problems of warning, communication, and public information in disaster, as well as to behavioral scientists.

Issuance of this report does not necessarily indicate concur rence of every member of the Committee on Disaster Studies in every statement made in the report, nor does publication imply Department of Defense indorsement of factual accuracy or opinion.
