about

Acclaimed epic fantasy author John Gwynne with the first book of a new trilogy.

The Ben-Elim, a race of warrior angels, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished lands. But their dominion is brutally enforced and their ancient enemy may not be as crushed as they thought.

In the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests - a sign of demonic black magic.

In the south, Riv, a young, tempestuous soldier, discovers a deadly rift within the Ben-Elim themselves.

Two individuals with two world-changing secrets. But where will they lead? And what role will Drem and Riv play in the Banished Land's fate? Difficult choices need to be made.

In the shadows, dark forces are gathering, waiting for their time to rise. . .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An awesome new beginning to a fantastic series! I loved coming back to The Banished Lands in A Time of Dread, even though I knew I would miss the characters from the first 4 books. John Gwynne does an amazing job making you care about these new people but giving you little reminders of the characters you fell in love with. For anyone new to The Banished Lands, you won't miss a step, the story is all there in front of you but I think for any newbies, it'll make you want to read the first 4 books. Which you should in my humble opinion. The tone is a bit different in A Time of Dread which I think is fantastic and I'm sure as an author, Mr. Gwynne needed to stretch some different narrative muscles. As cliche as it left me wanting more is... it's so true in this case. I can't wait for the story to continue. Thanks John!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth The Wait! A welcoming return to a world of angels, demons, betrayal, and death. I've been pumped about this series since I learned it was continuing, and it author John Gwynne did not disappoint! It had everything I expected (and some things I didn't), and this is the foundation of another series that is going to rip up my emotions in the most glorious way. The ending proved that, for sure. Like the first book in the previous series, MALICE, the start was a little slow in some places, but I was nevertheless glued to what was happening and engaged with all these new characters, like loyalty-torn Bleda, fiery Riv, and kind-hearted Drem. Some old characters made a return, the biggest one being one of my favourite giants Sig, and plenty of references to old characters and previous events. I also want to give a shout out to one of my favourite side characters, Cullen, who I hope makes it to the end. Seriously, if anything happens to him, there will be plenty of tears and flying objects. Anyway, all the stories were strong in their own right and honestly there wasn't one I preferred over the other. While all of the action was as strong and bloody as ever, the final few chapters set my heart pounding until the bittersweet end. I'm completely ready for the next book and cannot wait to see what happens next, and who makes it out alive. Definite recommend for anyone who likes a thrilling fantasy!
