Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining! There is a good balance of the 4 character's stories. This is very character-driven (which I like) and there is some "action" as well. I overall really enjoyed this first book although I was slightly annoyed with some of the character's choices and actions, but that's just my personal perspective. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it! I couldn't get enough of this book! Francine Rivers is an amazing writer who know how to weave a story. I couldn't put this book down, and I had to start the second book in the series right away! Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deep, detailed and advanturous I have been a Christian all my life and I am a huge fan of literature but have rarely found Christian Fiction appealing because the characters lack depth and are either all good, or all bad. This was not the case here, the characters are complex and flawed, the historical setting is research and detailed, and the story develops a lot (sometimes i found that it was almost too much and i would lose interest, but then would be swept back up in this story. At a point in the book I almost stopped, but then I was like "let me finish it, sees where the characters end up" and then the end got me like WHAT. I then had to go read the second one, which to this day is one of my favourite novels. Its not the perfect book, but the story is very well written, the characters have depth and the spiritual journey is real.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth Reading I bought the box set series, took a while to get into the book at first but after I did it was a really good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from That ending though! As much as I want to give this book 4 stars, I feel like there were times that I was disinterested and the story lost my attention. The sole reason for this is the length of the novel and that there was probably aspects of the story that could have been left out. This book is LONG. I read plenty of large books so this shouldn't be a problem but I felt like it took quite awhile to get into the story (200 or so pages) and even then, there were times that it could drag on. The pace did pick up 200 pages in and I became more interested in the characters. It was interesting how the storylines of Julia, Hadasseh, Marcus, and Atretes became intertwined. The ending? Definitely a shocker and heartbreaker because I didn't really believe it would follow through. It was a good ending though. Again, if this book was a couple hundred pages shorter, I'd give it four or even five stars but unfortunately, the unnecessary length of this novel was its downfall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This book took a while for me to get in to, but once I did, I could not put it down! I love the historical and biblical references in this book, and how Francine merged the lives of three separate characters/plots together. One of my favourites!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my all time favorite! First I have to say that I absolutely loved this book. It takes place in Ancient Rome around 117 A.D. If you are sensible to violence, it might not be a book for you. There are a lot of scenes involving gladiator fights, since one of the characters is a gladiator. Also, there are a lot of talks about crucifixion and Christians being fed to starving lions. The story is about Hadassah a young Christian who is taken from Jerusalem, when the city fell to the Romans, and is sold as a servant. She becomes a slave to a Roman family. Her duty is to serve the daughter of the family, Julia. The family also includes her brother, Marcus, and her parents, Decimus and Phoebe. The story is also centered around a German warrior who is made captives and is sold as a gladiator. I can't say a lot more about this book without revealing any spoilers. All I can say is that this book is very inspiring. It's a book about faith, love and courage. The characters are well developed and bring a lot of depth to the story. This is a long book, but for anyone who likes that period of time (though it's a very dark period, it is very interesting and rich in history) I would recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My all-time favourite book I LOVE this book! It is fascinating and engrossing. You easily fall in love with the characters. Most importantly though, each time I read it I am reminded of the kind of person I want to be. It's not very often that I read a fiction book and it has an impact on my life! A must read!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An engaging story & a faith builder I couldn't put this book down. When it ended, I screamed and burst into tears because of how close I felt to the characters. Then I realized it was a trilogy and blazed through them all in a week. My faith has grown as a result of this novel and the rest of the series. All the characters developed in such a profound way and I heard myself in so many of the things they were struggling with. Overall, a well done novel.
