Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read How did the Honourable East India Company sail it's ships half way around the world, to the Indies and China, found a monopoly that ruled more than a fifth of the world's population and generated a revenue greater than the rest of Britain? It wasn't easy. 'A World For The Taking.", details the hardships faced by the Ships and men in the quest for mercantile domination . Disease, storms and shipwreck; piracy and cutthroat competition, by French, Spanish, Portuguese and the Dutch. were not the only obstacles to face. The story of the Honourable East India is told in two styles by the author, Popular and academic.. The first person narrative of the men involved and and textbook description of the secondary sources combine to make the book interesting. First written circa 1914 the style is also somewhat dated but the book is solid and interesting and will help the reader..."realize the full extent of their indebtedness to the ships and sailors of the past in respect of discovery, empire, power and wealth."
