“Leonard and Gobi’s story represents the power of people working together and the profound depth of feeling possible between a man and his dog.”--Publishers Weekly

A man, a dog, and the lengths to which love will go to sacrifice for its companion.

Finding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages and the black sands of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace with him for 77 miles.

As Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well.  Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure he and Gobi’s friendship continued well after the finish line.  He found himself letting Gobi sleep in his tent at night, giving her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carrying her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would mean putting him behind in the race, or worse, prevent him from finishing at all.

Although Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater – a new outlook on life and a new friend that he planned on bringing home as soon as arrangements were made.  However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. Dion, with the help of strangers and a viral outpouring of assistance on the internet, set out to track her down, and reunite forever with the amazing animal that changed his life and proved to him and the world that miracles are possible.

Dion Leonard is a 41 year old Australian who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife Lucja. Dion has not only completed but competed in some of the world’s toughest ultra marathons across the planet’s most inhospitable landscapes. This includes running across the brutal Moroccan Sahara desert twice in the 250km Marathon Des Sables a...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Favourite Boring. This is another dog book that doesn't meet my top ten. I love dogs, but the ridiculous amount of time and money spent on finding and bringing "home" a dog from an Asian country is not believable. Not impressed with the description of the land or its people. It was obvious that the author didn't spend much time on research and tried to make a book out his passion for running. A story of someone with too much time and money and no focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Inspiring Story What an amazing story! I picked this book up on a whim. What can I say, I have always been a sucker for a cute face. I started reading it yesterday morning and didn't put it down until I was finished. The story speaks true to the power of love and spirit. I laughed and cried many times.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, running or stories about beating seemingly insurmountable odds. Thank you Dion and Gobi for sharing your story, and your love, with the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Touching! I loved this book so much! The story almost had two different storylines, it started with the man's running career and ending with tightly knit bond of man and dog. It is a must read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Uplifting story about the unbreakable bond of a man and his dog This is the feel good book of the year! Its a great read for travelers, animal lovers and runners. The book is an easy read and will leave you feeling uplifted. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the logistics and challenges of stage races as well as the Chinese culture through Dion's eyes. The best part of this book though is watching the unbreakable bond develop between a man and his dog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A heartwarming and inspiring true story! A stray but brave little dog(later named Gobi) meets her soul mate human(Dion Leonard) in the most remote region of China. Gobi runs along with Dion for nearly 80 miles in a 155 mile ultra marathon race where they developed an unbreakable bond. Where Gobi showed determination and grit in following Dion during the long challenging desert race, Dion was just as devoted and resolved in getting Gobi out of China safely and bringing her to his home in the UK. Finding Gobi is an amazing story and page turner. Once you start reading it, you'll not want to stop. If you love dogs, adventures, suspenses, stories of human interest, and inspiration, you'll love Finding Gobi.I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming, great read! Last year you may have remembered seeing the news story of the little stray dog who followed Dion Leonard, an Australian ultra marathon runner during a race across the Gobi Desert in China, and ran 77 miles right beside Dion. The adorable dog that he named Gobi, captured the hearts of thousands with her determination, and the image of her in Dion's arms with both of them wearing medals was one that sat with me long after the first rush of stories. I started following Gobi and Dion on social media, but I couldn't believe it when she had escaped from the home she was staying in at the beginning of the quarantine process, after Dion made a promise to "Bring Gobi Home". I actually gasped when I saw the posts that she had been found. For months afterwards I looked forward to Dion's "Pupdates" from the quarantine period in Beijing and their long trip back to his adopted home of Scotland. Upon hearing that there would be a book written about this story, I was a bit skeptical, thinking what more could be told than what I already knew about Dion and Gobi? (and an obsessive like me thought that I knew a lot!). It must have been hard for Dion Leonard, previously a bit of a private person I'm sure, open up about his difficult childhood and what gave him the drive and determination to take up such a demanding sport as ultra marathon running at a relatively late stage in life. The story jumps right in with the race in China and it was wonderful to read Dion's observations of this little scruffy "it" (not even knowing she was a "she") appearing out of nowhere and sticking to him like glue. The point where the bond was formed is described as when Dion had to carry Gobi across a river and from then on she was always the most comfortable and "safe" in his arms. He promised to bring her home to Scotland, after all, "She had given everything she had to keep up with me. How could I leave her behind when I finished the race?". What an ordeal that would turn out to be, and that is where the story most interestingly diverts from what I had known from social media and the news. I don't want to give away any details, but to read about the lengths that Dion, not to mention his wife back home and an army of volunteers in China, took to make sure Gobi was safe and healthy was just incredible. All while Dion sacrificed months of his time away from his family and home. A very well-written, excellent page turner for anyone who is interested in extreme sports and of course adorable animals. Dion will be donating proceeds to promoting Adopt Don't Shop and animal rescues. There were a few questions that remained, however, such as where exactly did Gobi come from? Why did she "choose" Dion? We don't know, but we do find out what an incredibly special dog she is, and whose story will encourage everyone to "find their own Gobi".
