Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Epic with art for all tastes First things first. Grant Morrison, love him or hate him it's hard to downplay his influence on comics over the past 20+ years. Second, his Batman run has been great if not briliant. Third, it's not for everyone. With that out of the way, lets get into the Absolute Batman and Robin. There is very little in this beautiful volume that is not already collected in the 3 separate deluxe hardcovers of this run with the exception of the variant covers (which are in the Absolute). The original DeluxeHCs as far as I know are hard to come by anyway so there is very little point in looking to buy those instead. They ran @ $30US retail ( not amazon $ )anyway so in my opinion there is little point in chosing those over this Absolute. Let's call this run the 2nd chapter of GMs Batmythology. The 1st chapter being Batman: The Black Glove Deluxe Edition (collection Batman and Son, & The Black Glove ) & Batman R.I.P. and the 3rd chapter being Batman Incorporated Vol. 1 Deluxe, Batman Incorporated Vol. 1: Demon Star (The New 52) and 1 more yet to be completed Batman Inc story. The question is do we need to invest in all this to enjoy Absolute Batman and Robin. IMHO ,,,,NO. This is a very self contained story that a reader should be able to enjoy on it's own. The one stipulation to this is the omission of Return of Bruce Wayne. I'm positive some fans will complain that this Absolute is incomplete without this vol. I disagree. This is the story of Dick and Damian as Batman and Robin, and Bruce's resurection while improtant to whole of the story is not needed to follow Dick and Damian on their mission to solve the msytery of what happend to Bruce. That being said I have read all of Grant Morrisons run, so my opinion maybe infulence by knowing the whole story. The art. As the title says " Art for all tastes " I love it all. Frank Quietly, Cameron Stewart, Andy Clarke, Frazer Irving and others all add their unique voice to this 17 issue collection. All the art really shine in this size, but Frazer Irvings really sees the benefit here. What was originally art that was not to my taste has now become one of the 2 best in this collection ( Frank Quietly's being the other ). If you do not own these stories in another format I would greatly recomend this nice vol. If you already own the hard covers there is very little extra that you do not already own, so don't expect anything new. Of all the ways to own this run I think this Absolute is the best, does that justify owning it in 2 or 3 formats probably not. It does however justify selling the singles or HCs and using the proceeds to buy this.
