Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bendis Puts His Avengers in a Dark Place! I started reading comics with the Avengers vs. X-Men event, and then worked my way forwards and backwards as I followed different story threads that interested me. When this event started, I had trouble with the way the story starts right away without any set-up. Jonathan Hickman was a couple arcs into his Avengers run, and the different characters and tone threw me off a bit. I just had trouble seeing how this story fit into the Marvel NOW! universe. Having read more, and looking back on it, I can see clearly that this is not so much a chapter in Marvel NOW as it is an epilogue to Brian Michael Bendis's amazing decade long Avengers run. All the familiar characters from that run return in this story. Plot threads started in the first arc of the 2010 Avengers volume, and specifically in Avengers 12.1, come to fruition in this story. Ultimately, this story makes a lot more sense and feels more satisfying when read as part of that whole Avengers series. It's still not a perfect book, and it's not as good as Bendis's earlier Avengers stories (particularly New Avengers), but it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It's unfortunate that a large portion of the new readers that are going to pick this up are going to expect something similar to this summer's Avengers movie sequel, because I don't think this is going to meet their expectations. I do hope that this story drives people to dig up some of the other excellent Avengers stories that lead up to this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marvellous Work of Art This collection has faced a lot of criticism, the criticism is undeserving the series makes a wondrous beginning to marvel now and will build up into the infinity series.
