Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L'eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she'll have inside information about the mysterious L'eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara's blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn't sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L'eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn't seem more alien. She's certain about one thing though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.
Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn't just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life-not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Different Alienated is the first book in the series. I saw it on BookBud and thought it sounded interesting. I really enjoy YA books because you really get to know the characters without the big sometimes outrageous sex scenes in adult books. So they're a nice change. It's different from the paranormal books I normally read, but I love sci-ft shows so I gave it a go. I got caught up in the story and what was happening that I really didn't want to put it down. I finished it up in between plays of the Super Bowl, which normally I would just watch, but the book was getting down to the end and wanted to know how it would end. They say in the adult books, opposites attract and it fell true in this book. And love can be sneaky. Anything else gives to much of the storyline, and that takes all the fun away. It was actually written so well, you knew all things would turn out, of course, but how would it end. I look forward to the next book in the series, Invade. I rarely will buy an e-book at full price, but this one I will, to see where the author takes it from the end of Alienated.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A cute and fun read about love that's out of this atmosphere. - Nova @ Out of Time A cute and fun read about love that's out of this atmosphere. - Nova @ Out of Time I was attracted to this book firstly, by it's cover. Not only is it pretty, but it also describes the story in a really beautiful way! It shows the contrast between characters like a human Cara and a L'eihr Aelyx. I anticipated this to be a lot more different than a lot of books I've read before with human and alien interactions. I found this to be a cute read. It reminded me a little bit like a contemporary with a bunch of darker themes underlying it. It was more about the assimilation of aliens called L'eihrs on Earth. Have you ever wondered what would happen if Aliens showed themselves to us and had some kind of treaty/alliance? Melissa Landers sure has and the way it was describe it was both realistic and imaginative. It was darker than I expected it to be because of the public reaction to this new species as well as the conspiracies that were subtly inserted in the story. I found the main character, Cara to be likeable. She didn't really connect to me personally, but I didn't have any problems with her. She did what she knew was right and didn't let anyone push her down, even though a lot of people were against her numerous times in the book. She was also genuine in her efforts to do her job to get Aelyx comfortable in the human world. I actually loved Aelyx. I couldn't connect to him either; he was just so indifferent and inhumane. I adored that I got to see a gradual change in him from Cara. By the middle of the book, he grew feelings for her and started to actually behave with emotion and life. It made me so happy to see that major change and I didn't even notice it was happening until very far into the book. I loved Aelyx because of how much he acted like a Sherlock to me. He walked around with an air of superiority that he was better than all humans for his (far) advanced intellect and it was Cara who changed his opinion. It was also him who was running the whole "master plan" and him who grew the conscience in the end. I swooned so much over him, but ultimately, he deserves to be with someone as "human"(full of emotion and morals) as Cara. I didn't know what to expect from this novel. The writing was absolutely fun. It was told with a casual tone that, at the same time, didn't seem like a joke or not professional enough. That was the main reason it reminded me of the contemporary genre! I enjoyed it a lot while reading! This book, however, wasn't that serious. Though it had a few serious issues, I felt like they could've been handled better. At least in a way that would make me "feel". As a blogger, I read a lot of books (obviously). While reading, I was obviously entertained, but looking back on that time, I can't remember all that happened in this story. My socks weren't knocked off whereas there are some books I will read once and it will change my whole perspective on life; that or leave me in a daze for a couple of days. If you're looking for a book that's very laid back with a couple of issues, a very hot boy and aliens, I definitely recommend this book. Fans of Sherlock will enjoy Aelyx's personality and transition as he learns more and more about what it really means to be human.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Review from Swept Away By Books Since the moment I saw the cover for Alienated, I knew I had to read it as soon as I could. And I was so totally lucky enough to have won a copy from Melissa on The Irish Banana Review. Alienated really reminded me of Split Second in the sense that it was a sci/fi book but with a complete contemporary feel as well. Landers depicted high school, relationships between friends, family and love interest so flawlessly. There was laugh out loud moments and incredibly tense moments. The revolt half the world seems to put on because of the L'eihrs and the term "speciest" depicted real life problems. There was secrecy and deceit, but there was also that aspect of forbidden love. Aelyx and Cara were the perfect balance for each other. Cara had a fiery redheaded temper and passion, and while in the beginning it seems as if Aelyx has virtually no emotions, he warms up and balances Cara out. They have their swoony and adorable moments too! I basically just want to gush over their relationship. I am so beyond excited for all of you guys to read this book! It is definitely one to watch out for in 2014! Melissa Landers is an extremely talented author with a flair for humour and contemporary experiences, set in a fun and totally other world sci/fi setting that is fully fleshed out and beyond interesting.

Editorial Reviews

Gr 9 Up In Alienated, Cara Sweeney, high school overachiever and class valedictorian, has been selected to host the first L'eihr exchange student. Initial excitement and pride are quickly overshadowed by doubt and unease upon meeting the alien Aelyx. Although almost genetically identical, the two cultures are as different as night and day and the level of discomfort is evident. Further complicating matters is anti-alien paranoia and violence directed not only at Aelyx and the other exchange students, but also at Cara and her family. Drawn together due to circumstance, the teens start falling for each other. In Invaded, the couple continues to try to forge an alliance between the two planets, as mutual survival of both populations are depending on it. Amid hate and an unknown future, Cara must decide between love, the unknown, and the future she always dreamed of having. Excellent character development and a nice integration between modern reality and science fiction drive the plot in a satisfying story arc. Continuation of the story line is seamless between series installments, giving readers a continued interest in and connection to the protagonists. Themes of racism and environmentalism are integral to understanding and developing the emotional level of the story as well as the momentum of the plot. Teens will be rooting for the galactic couple while enjoying the action and suspense that runs through the two volumes. A fun pick for fans of sci-fi with a bit of romance. Eliz
