Ben Haynes is quite taken with Amelia Carlyle when he meets her at her sisters wedding, but he knows he will be returning to Kansas and life on his fathers ranch soon. Still, Ben calls on Amelia several times and they find they have more in common than they first realized and, despite their differences, have taken a liking to each other. As he leaves for Kansas, they promise to write one another. Back in Kansas, Ben begins to save money toward a home for Amelia even though he has not made his intentions known. Hes relying on God to make a way. Meanwhile, Amelia is presented to society and must agree to several different young men vying for her attention. None can hold a candle to Ben. He has captured her heart, and his letters only whet her appetite for an adventurous life in Kansas, helping Ben with the ranch. Due to his grandfathers failing health, Ben returns to Boston for Christmas in 1875 and takes the opportunity to call on Amelia despite her parents objections.
