Written as a response to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, this novel takes place in 1839, eleven years after the plot of Poe’s novel and one year after its publication. Jeorling, a wealthy American, narrates An Antarctic Mystery, telling the story of his adventure from the Kerguelen Islands back to the U.S.
To reach the U.S., Jeorling joins Len Guy’s ship, the Halbrane. During the voyage, they find a dead sailor from the ship, the Jane, and a note with the body. The note informs them that a few of the crew from the Jane, including the captain, William Guy, survived an assassination attempt at Tsalal. Len Guy, the brother of William, decides to search for the Jane’s crew.
Jeorling and Hunt, a mystifying sailor, also join the search for the missing crew. The Halbrane advances into the Antarctic Ocean and onto the isles of Bennet and Tsalal. The Jane had visited Bennet’s isle and Tsalal, but an earthquake destroyed the islands. The adventure continues as they find remains on Tsalal, but no sign of the ship, Jane.
