Breq is a soldier who used to be a warship. Once a weapon of conquest controlling thousands of minds, now she has only a single body and serves the emperor.

With a new ship and a troublesome crew, Breq is ordered to go to the only place in the galaxy she would a agree to go: to Athoek Station to protect the family of a lieutenant she once knew - a lieutenant she murdered in cold blood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Refreshing Approach to Science Fiction I loved this story and its main character, which is not at all human, despite existing in a human body. The story provides, with some subtle humor (and an outrageous moment or two) a machine's eye view of human activities, from its inability to master gender identifications in different languages to its reasons for preferring one human over another. Although it is not human, I found her-it easy to relate to, and was able to identify with it. Wonderful story. Well worth the read. The best I've read in a long time.
