Bestselling author Jane Christmas decides to enter a convent to discern whether she is, as she puts it, ""nun material."" But just as she convinces herself to take the plunge, her long-term partner, Colin, surprises her with a marriage proposal. Determined not to let her monastic dreams get sidelined, Christmas puts her engagement aside and embarks on an extraordinary year-plus adventure to four convents—one in Canada and three in the U.K. Among these communities of cloistered nuns and monks, she shares—and occasionally rails against—the silent, reverent, pared-down existence she has sought all her life. With insight and humour, she provides a glimpse into a seldom-seen lifestyle.

Jane Christmas is the author of Incontinent on the Continent, What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim, and The Pelee Project. She has three grown children and lives in London, England.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from And then there were nuns I finished recently reading this story and I certainly would like to recommend it. Why? Because regardless of age, gender and any religious affiliations, the story was for me about a person's journey to look for that special place where s/he will ", where you feel authentic and comfortable". I would like to take the opportunity to recommend all the other books written by Jane Christmas. Looking forward to her next book. Mariana Rodriguez

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read I loved this book. It is well written. Jane has a wonderful sense of humour, which comes shining through. She is very descriptive, allowing you to travel with her on her journey. I admire her honesty and candidness while searching out her calling; dilemma. I could relate to many areas in this book to my own life. It was truly inspiring and up lifting. Looking forward to reading pilgrims.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3 cheers for Jane Christmas 'Nuns' I loved this book. I have read 3/4 of Christmas' books and have loved them all. This one touched a cord with me as she chose to share her experience researching a life-style that, let's face it, is not very main-stream. Her examination of these 2 huge life decisions is inspiring, each with it's pros/cons of course, but I so admire her commitment to being true to herself. If you're battling with a decision, or have been told you are too 'old' to do something you've always wondered about, read this book; Jane will hold your hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will Not Disappoint I have been a fan of Jane's since the beginning.  Her ability to challenge her own thoughts has been evident  from one book to the next.  Even though I am not either Catholic or Anglican, I too search for a deeper meaning with something greater.  I also enjoy her on-going ability to spark my interest in travel.  This book will not disappoint, for how can anything that Jane writes?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real ... Witty ... Insightful! In addition to what has already been so eloquently said, I would strongly recommend that you read "What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim", preferably BEFORE ".... Nuns" in order to get a bit of the back-story. However, no matter if you read it before or after, you will be afforded some pleasurable "AHA" moments in either book. The "Pelee Project" also offers some foundation to "....Nuns". Keep in mind that all of Jane's books are basically memoirs and tie into one another, albeit somewhat loosely. BUY it, read it, live it and enjoy it. If you don't buy it, you'll wish you had . . . have a pencil/highlighter handy for the witty and insightful comments as well as for the recipe!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read I found her writing to be inspiring and identified myself with many (if not all!) the stories she shared. My wife and I (along with our children) had great conversations around Jane's "life as an aspiring nun". More importantly, we felt that even though she touched on sensitive topics at times, she did it with much elegance and respect for her (or everyone else's) faith. For that, we thank her. Finally, I liked this book so much that I felt compelled (like many others I am sure) to let her (Jane Christmas) know how much I enjoyed reading it. To our surprise, she kindly replied to my message!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Funny and thought provoking I have long been a Jane Christmas fan. Very funny and at the same time thought provoking look at how religion in inclusive and exclusive at the same time. Be prepared to laugh and sit down to a great read. I can't wait for her next book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from And Then There Were Nuns I work at a bookstore in White Rock BC, a part-time retirement position. I saw this book on the table a couple of weeks ago, and thought "No way am I reading that. It must be either silly, or sappy or angry..."  Then the other day on my day off while perusing a stack of books as is my custom, it included "Nuns".  What a wonderful surprise awaited me!  This book is so thoughtful, inward, and deep.  Having spent 17 years in a Protestant Franciscan community in Darmstadt, Germany, a, shall we say, "growth experience,"  I consider myself a bit of an expert on religious life and vocations.  The book was a delightful breath of fresh air.  Am already planning to read the other books Jane has written.  Such a fun, funny, eminently readable and insightful book on the pursuit of a vocation!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another delightful read from Jane Christmas! I have read all of Jane's books and this one doesn't disappoint. She is such an engaging writer and presents her thoughts and experiences with unflinching candor. Although personal, it is also so highly relatable. And, of course, funny. Very funny. She is skillful at blending humour and pathos, and presents a balanced look at religion and life in religious communities. Get thee to a bookstore and pick up a copy of this book!
