Excerpt: ... financial situation of the association, and report thereon as soon as convenient. The committee reported at a special meeting on the sixteenth; the report was recommitted, with instructions to print it, and distribute it to the members. At the quarterly meeting in April, the report was taken up, and a. discussion ensued which occupied the whole time of the meeting. Some amendments were made, and it was then adopted in the following form:--The committee to whom was referred that part of the report of the committee of finance which relates to the diminution of the funds, have attended to the duty assigned them, and submit the following report:--It appears, from a very minute and careful examination of the treasurers book, that the expenses have gradually been increasing in a ratio larger than the increase of the receipts from the fees of admission and quarterages of the members. This increase has principally been in the various appropriations which have from year to year been voted by the association for the maintenance of schools, lectures, and to the committee of relief. These objects have ever been considered of primary importance, reflecting honor on the association, and adding much to its usefulness, and which your committee, in common with a large majority of the association, would feel deep regret in being obliged to curtail. Yet your committee have unavoidably been brought to the conclusion that this must be done, or some means be devised to increase the annual income to an amount sufficient to cover the actual expenses, without having recourse to the admission fees; which amount, as will hereafter be shown, is all wanted to meet the demands which must unavoidably from time to time be made upon it.
