His parents split up when he was very young and, until the age of twelve, he lived with his mother, Peggy, in Michigan. In the early years of adolescence, he started smoking marijuana and later on tried heroin, cocaine, and Quaaludes.

In 1982, Kiedis found stimulation for his singing styling from the strike song, “The Message,” from Grandmaster Flash as well as the Furious Five. He set up a band with friends Slovak and Flea; even though they were already in another bands.

In the long run, the band turned out to be recognized as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
