about

Anthony Bourdain is a man of many appetites. And for many years, first as a chef, later as a world-traveling chronicler of food and culture on his CNN series Parts Unknown, he has made a profession of understanding the appetites of others. These days, however, if he’s cooking, it’s for family and friends.

Appetites, his first cookbook in more than ten years, boils down forty-plus years of professional cooking and globe-trotting to a tight repertoire of personal favorites—dishes that everyone should (at least in Mr. Bourdain’s opinion) know how to cook. Once the supposed "bad boy" of cooking, Mr. Bourdain has, in recent years, become the father of a little girl—a role he has embraced with enthusiasm. After years of traveling more than 200 days a year, he now enjoys entertaining at home. Years of prep lists and the hyper-organization necessary for a restaurant kitchen, however, have caused him, in his words, to have "morphed into a psychotic, anally retentive, bad-tempered Ina Garten."

The result is a home-cooking, home-entertaining cookbook like no other, with personal favorites from his own kitchen and from his travels, translated into an effective battle plan that will help you terrify your guests with your breathtaking efficiency.

Anthony Bourdain is the executive chef at brasserie Les Halles in New York. After two years at Vassar College, he attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. He has since spent more than two decades working in professional kitchens. His memoir "Kitchen Confidential" (2001) was expanded from an article he'd written for "The...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay Love his TV show and I found some of the ingredients in the recipes exotic

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Entertaining to read but the recipes while good are not that interesting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyed it, but not regularly used This cookbook was a gift, and the food is definitely tasty. More photos would definitely be helpful, and some of the recipes use ingredients that you will likely have to go out for specifically. It's not one of those recipe books where you can say "what can I make out of what I already have in my fridge?" I would recommend it though, because Anthony Bourdain's writing is entertaining and the recipes that I've tried are definitely delicious!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not the best Always loved his writing and his shows. Given the edgy and funky graphic on the cover, the inside material is a bit tame. Still a fun cookbook.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great book Had lots of food options but probably not good for people just starting off #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Diverse cookbook, probably not for beginners It's nice to see chefs venture beyond the most common recipes that pop up in most cookbooks, although some of 'Appetites' is definitely not geared to people who are 'beginners' in the kitchen. Bourdain has a mix of approachable, familiar recipes and things you've probably never thought to make but look worth a try. I do 100% recommend the chicken pot pie recipe, which is not only pretty straightforward to make, but also REALLY tasty.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice but had expected better Was hoping for a better offering from Bourdain. He seem to eat more than anyone else in the world, with incredible variety and connections and some o these recipes were so basic and boring. Mostly delicious but I think this had potential to be a stronger book than it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple As far as cookbooks go, its alright. Some original ideas, others are variations of the typical cookbook recepies. Its worth the investment though, I like the idea of a cookbook for us laymen...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you love his shows - this is the book for you It's not just about the recipes - it's about the experience and culture as well as the food. This is for lovers of cuisine from all over the world.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great photos! I love Bourdain, his TV shows, his writing, his cynicism. He is my celebrity comfort food. My parents gave us this book for Christmas and I quite enjoyed reading it over the break. The photography is spectacular. If you like Ralph Steadman's illustrations, you will love the punk-rockish quality of the layouts. As for the recipes, well, not exactly easy-peasy home cooking. I appreciate Bourdain's sensibility but not sure how many of the recipes I will attempt. I did make the Buttermilk Biscuits and they turned out quite well. I have a similar recipe that I prefer but this one is much quicker and makes the perfect quantity for a single meal. If you are adventurous and have access to an above-average (i.e. big city) grocery, give it a whirl. A must have for Bourdainistas ;)

Editorial Reviews

“APPETITES, in addition to presenting an eclectic, expletive-laden portrait of one’s family’s fare, is also a really great cookbook.”
