To Rosa Alcantara, the exotic world of Sicily, with its reputation for murder and intrigue, is just that—exotic, and wholly unknown. But when her life in Brooklyn falls apart, she must travel there to her family's ancestral home, where centuries of secrets await her. Once there, Rosa falls head over heels for Alessandro Carnevare, the son of a Sicilian mafia family, whose handsome looks and savage grace intrigue and unsettle her. But their families are sworn enemies, and her aunt and sister believe Alessandro is using Rosa. And when Rosa encounters a tiger one night—a tiger with very familiar eyes—she can no longer deny that neither the Carnevares nor the Alcantaras are what they seem.

Ancient myths brought to life in the Sicilian countryside, dangerous beasts roaming the hills, and a long history of familial bloodlust prove to Rosa that she can't trust anyone—even her own family. Torn between loyalty to her family and love for their mortal enemy, Rosa must make the hardest decision of her life: stay in Sicily with her new love . . . or run as far and as fast as she can.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unqiue and Interesting YA novel There are so many beautiful things about this novel. Not Hollywood beautiful, i.e overdone with glitz and glam. A real authentic, gritty sort of beautiful. A diamond in the rough kind of novel. This novel takes place in Europe, Sicily, to be exact. Right off the bat, this was a major plus for Arcadia Awakens. It gave it an exotic and gritty feel, that just can't be replicated in a North American setting. Since the story centers strongly around the mob, it could have easily taken in place in New York or New Jersey but benefited greatly from a setting that could tie the story directly with ancient history. The history was also something unique and exciting. Instead of focusing on more commonly known mythology like the Greek gods, Kai Meyers brings us into the world of Arcadians. It was something I had never read about before and something I definitely wanted to research further upon finishing. The characters that make up this story were all very interesting. My initial fear, was that because they were all mobsters they would fall into some of the more typical, comical stereotypes. Thankfully, this was not the case. There was a lot of depth to the main cast of characters and I found them quite realistic. Despite the fact that I enjoyed almost all the characters in this book, I still have some reservations about Rosa. I don't dislike her but I never reached the point where I really warmed up to her. At times she was incredibly irrational and at other times I found her motivations really unclear. But it could just be me. Overall, Arcadia Awakens is a really unique book. It brings something new and unexpected to the YA landscape. Mixing an interesting setting, with an unusual cast of characters (the mob) and adding a dash of mythology was just the right recipe for this stunning novel. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Originally reviewed at Christa's Hooked on Books (

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Exotic Setting and Lore That Instantly Pulls You In *Copy provided by publisher before on-sale date for review* Kai Meyer is one author that I've been vastly aware of for quite some time. In the past, I recall being told about several of his novels, though all in German, and had always been curious about what exactly made Kai Meyer such an enthralling author. It wasn't until I received a copy of Arcadia Awakens, a translation of his novel Arkadien erwacht, that I truly discovered the incredible detail and imagination that this author possesses. Arcadia Awakens tells the story of Rosa Alcantara, a snarky woman with an attitude that could tear you apart like mince meat. Leaving her not-so-glamorous life in Brooklyn, Rosa makes the move to the beautiful streets of Sicily, where her family is closely connected to the mafia. There she meets Alessandro Carnevare, who's unbelievably gorgeous and dangerous. You see, he's the son of a powerful Sicilian Mafia family, one that's been enemy to that of the Alcantaras for years. With her move to Sicily, Rosa never expects to uncover secrets that both the Alcantaras and the Carnevares have kept securely hidden for centuries. Romance That Makes You Swoon and Sigh I AM IN LOVE! No, seriously, I am in love with Arcadia Awakens. Coming across a novel that moves you so much that you fan girl about it (and literally won't keep quiet about) only happens on the rare occasion, and for me it's been a while. For a novel that I fell so in love with, it started off on the wrong foot. Beginning Arcadia Awakens was a hassle, a drag, an absolute chore. The first few chapters dragged on for a very long time, introducing the protagonist Rosa Alcantare, who by the way was not very appealing at all in the beginning. However, moving further into the novel I discovered that it's sluggish and uneventful pace cleared up, lifting the cloud of confusion that the first several chapters had created. The history and lore within Arcadia Awakens is completely captivating. It grabs your interest and makes you want to learn more. In fact, some of the lore you'll encounter will bring about twists and turns that you never would have predicted, I know I certainly didn't. For most of the novel, I tried to grasp what exactly made Arcadia Awakens a paranormal novel. However, after moving through the mafia-related drama, I was quite surprised to discover what it's paranormal twist was! The romance - Arcadia Awakens has it! The clued in relationship between Alessandro and Rosa was one that easily pulled me in. Alessandro was an instant hit for me, his appealing personality would surely do in any swooning female reader. With that said, I feel it best to mention that I was a little put off by his hot and cold mood when he was first introduced in the story, despite his instant appeal. However, moving further into the novel, I found myself loving how much he grew as a character, by accepting responsibility and growing from it. With that said, I found Arcadia Awakens to be an intriguing, exciting, heartwarming, and refreshing paranormal read. Young adult and adult readers alike will, without a doubt, find themselves highly anticipating the sequel, I know I am!
