From national bestselling author Sharon Shinn comes a stunningly beautiful novel of a distant future—where the fate of the world rests on the voice of an angel...

Through science, faith, and force of will, the Harmonics carved out for themselves a society that they conceived as perfect. Diverse peoples held together by respect for each other. Angels to guard the mortals and mystics to guard the forbidden knowldge. Jehovah to watch over them all...

Generations later, the armed starship Jehovah still looms over the planet of Samaria, programmed to unleash its arsenal if peace is not sustained. But with the coming of an age of corruption, Samaria's only hope lies in the crowning of a new Archangel. The oracles have chosen Gabriel for this honor, and further decreed that he must first wed a mortal woman named Rachel.

It is his destiny and hers. And Gabriel is certain that she will greet the news of her betrothal with enthusiasm, and a devotion to duty equal to his own.

Rachel, however, has other ideas...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liked the plot a lot ***Spoilers Ahead*** I liked the concept of this book a lot, the world is so consumed by greed and vanity that to believe in a God or deity that would punish them so severely if they didn't follow some tradition is out-dated. Out with the old out-dated ideas of a fear of the deity and in with the new modern materialistic approach. The execution was a bit slow at times, but I was interested enough in the characters and the outcome and the ending was wonderful. I love it when justice is served.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A really good story This novel is a terrific example of sci-fi/fantasy that features strong characters and a good plot, not just the novelty of a "strange world" setting. I have read and re-read it several times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my all-time favourites! This is a Sci Fi book for women. Men like it too but there is romance in it which some men prefer not to read. I adore this book and the entire Samaria series. I was hooked by the first few pages. The world is richly painted, the characters are extremely vivid and alive. There are really interesting twists and turns. The ending is totally satisfying. I own the entire Samaria series, have read them more than once and will read the series every few years (just as I have Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter). These are keepers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mighty, mighty chorus! Hands down, best written description of singing I've ever encountered. Shinn's blatant passion for vocal prowess practically leapt from the page to infect me with glorious fantasies of angelic chorus. I became enraptured by the characters' song as if they were giving me my very own private concert. Beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No wonder it won an award When I picked up Archangel, it was more an impulse buy than anything. At first I was skeptical about this angel/human romance but I found that it was very good. First of all, the concept of Samaria itself is very intriguing. The 'god' of Samaria is a orbiting control center for weather and the like and the angels are flesh and blood, genetically altered 'remote controls' of the satellite if you will. Archangel is the story of the angel Gabriel and his wife-to-be Rachel. The romance of these two are skillfully interwoven into the story making this book both a sci-fi and romance novel. As the characters thrive to solve the turmoil on Samaria, the love between the archangel-to-be and his bride develops quietly on the side. The characterization as well as the setting is developed fabulously. It is a great read that'll make you feel quite satisfied. I will, without a doubt, recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Astounding! When this book was recommended to me I wasn't too keen to read it, as I'm not a big fantasy fan, but finally I did. Now I wish I hadn't waited so long! This book, as well as her other three angel books are amazing. I enjoyed them immensely, and would reccomend them to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Archangel I was very pleased with this sweet, appealing novel. Sure, it has a plot straight out of a bad romance, but the idea and style is fantastic. I actually couldn't put it down. Recommend to any sci-fi or fantasy fan, or someone with a liking for angels.
