about

This Printz Honor Book is a “tender, honest exploration of identity” (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship.

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flawless This is a fantastic novel. A great coming of age story with fantastic characters. A super breezy read, I read it in one sitting because I couldn't tear myself from the page. Reminds me a lot of Chaim Potok's "The Chosen," and I think it'll be a classic in high school classrooms in the near future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing work of YA literature This is a beautifully simple story that focuses primarily on characterization. It is thoughtful, heartbreaking, and grounded in the complexities of young adult friendships. This is one of my favourites and I teach it each year to grade 8 & 9 students. Also a work of LGBTQ fiction! Awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is my favourite book of all time. The writing and characters of this story make it so memorable. The writing is so beautiful and captures the characters so well. However, if you're looking for an exciting story, this isn't the book for you. It really focuses and the characters and their feelings. If that's something you're into reading, this is a beautiful story that I would recommend over and over again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautifully written 4.5 stars for the poetic prose and the lovely but quirky friendship between Ari & Dante. :) Loved the dynamic between them and both of their parents. The secondary characters were okay but I didn't like them so much. Again, this author is an amazing writer. Definitely teared up while reading some of the chapters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! Honestly, I had no idea what i was getting myself into when i picked this book up, but it blew me away. It's such a great coming of age novel that is so refreshing as it focuses no only on the characters relationships, but also about aspects such as mental health and family dynamics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All of the feels! The year that I read this it immediately became my favorite read of the entire year. This novel still holds up as one of my favorites of all time. It's an amazing and beautiful story. I always struggle to find the words to express just how much I love it...that's just how good it is! The story is very character driven and both Ari and Dante are amazingly depicted and fleshed out throughout the novel. They each have very distinctive and distinguishable voices and personalities. This book is just so happy-making! #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from liked this book a lot Maybe 4.5 stars**? I have mixed feelings about this book. It was beautiful and I really liked it, but i also felt like it was a little boring and I didn't have the problem of "I can't put this book down!!" It was a great book and I really liked it, maybe just not the best book out there :) I loved the ending though it was so satisfying and made me happy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A beautiful story. OH MY GOODNESS I'M GONNA CRY ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THAT BEAUTIFUL HEARTWARMING FLUTTERY FLUFF OF HAPPINESS ENDING. IT COULDN'T HAVE ENDED MORE BEAUTIFULLY. Dante and Ari are so adorable and intriguing, fun characters to read about. Dante is very admirable with his uncensored and lovable personality. Ari is imaginative, a deep thinker; just as lovable as Dante. he's one of those people you just want to hug. Their chemistry and the ways that they were similar and different to each other was just perfect. I can't explain how much I loved them individually and together. This is such a hearty story. Heartwarming, heartbreaking, heartfelt. And the realistic personal wars that each of the characters fought and the way it was all portrayed and written was so beautiful and lyrical. <b><i>"He looked so happy and I wondered about that, his capacity for happiness. Where did that come from? Did I have that kind of happiness inside of me?"</i></b>

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my all time favourite books bought this without really knowing what to expect, and it has easily become one of my favourite books of all time! it was absolutely phenomenal and heartwarming, could not put it down. the book doesn't really have a plot, it's more structured around the characters. a really great self-discovery and identity book! i've read this over 5 times and found myself bawling my eyes out each time :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE Wow, this was pure perfection! I started out reading this book with a neutral mind. I thought it was going to be good, but I didn't think it was going to be as brilliant as it turned out to be.Honestly, there are some books that you shouldn't live without reading and this is one of them. Clever, realistic, touching, funny, and endearing! A must read!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it was fine This was a good book. And the idea of it was beautiful, and the message from it was beautiful, but as a book, I didn't think it was beautiful. It was a good book. Sure. I enjoyed reading it. But it didn't blow me away. I'm glad that I read it, and I'm glad that the author wrote about this the way that he did, but I didn't fall in love. I didn't like the way that it was written. I didn't like the short sentences and the choppy dialogue. I didn't like that I didn't know who was talking half the time because there was so much back and forth without any 'he saids'. The story was good. What happened in the story was good. How it came together was good. but to me, it just wasn't as special as everyone else thinks it was.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart-warming. This book means a lot to me..I felt as if I knew both Aristotle and Dante personally and it really moved me. This book is so beautifully written and makes my heart happy.
Date published: 2017-01-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Read This book is quite simply beautiful. I read it in a single sitting. There really isn't much of a 'plot' or an event that the story wraps itself around. The book is about a boy. A boy who struggles with his identity, his sexuality, his heritage, who is learning to love himself and others. The setting of the book is lovely, the pacing is wonderful. But more than anything, I fell in love with the characters. It really reiterated how magical books are - I have nothing in common with Aristotle, and yet I could still relate to him and see pieces of myself in him. All in all, this book is heart breaking, heart warming, and will stick with you long after the final page. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from READ THIS BOOK This might just be the best book I've read in 2016. There is not much plot to speak of, it's more just following the two main characters through their lives. The relationships in this book are touching and realistic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous The Greatest of the Modern Love Stories: Two racialized boys who learn that only they can determine their relationship. Rated 5 out of 5 by from BUY IT AND READ IT i really wish i could give this novel infinity stars because that's what it deserves. this novel is so beautiful. i love it so much and i'm still wondering why I haven't read it sooner. i love dante and ari so much it hurts, ok, they have become my favourite characters and i already want to read this book over again. this book has passed the outsiders (my old favourite book) and i'm so happy about it. i can't stop crying. wtf. but basically since i hit page 300+ i haven't stopped crying or wanting to. i needed to take so many breaks reading this because it either made me too happy i couldn't think or too sad i couldn't read through my tears. thank you benjamin alire sáenz for writing such a beautiful, amazing and heart warming book.

Editorial Reviews

“Benjamin Alire Saenz is a writer with a sidewinder punch. Spare sentences connect resonant moments, and then he knocks you down with emotional truth. The story of Ari and Dante’s friendship widens and twists like a river, revealing truths about how hard love is, how family supports us, and how painfully deep you have to go to uncover an authentic self.”
