about

In Dust and Light, national bestselling author Carol Berg returned to the world of the award-winning Flesh and Spirit. Now she continues the saga of a man whose past is veiled in shadows....

Ever since the Order of the Equites Cineré stole his memory, his name, and his heart, thinking about the past makes Greenshank’s head ache. After two years of rigorous training, he is almost ready to embrace the mission of the Order—to use selfless magic to heal the troubles of Navronne. But on his first assignment alone, the past comes racing back, threatening to drown him in conspiracy, grief, and murder.

He is Lucian de Remeni—a sorcerer whose magical bents for portraiture and history threaten the safety of the earth and the future of the war-riven kingdom of Navronne. He just can’t remember how or why.

Fighting to unravel the mysteries of his power, Lucian must trace threads of corruption that reach from the Pureblood Registry into the Order itself, the truth hidden two centuries in the past and beyond the boundaries of the world...

Carol Berg is the national bestselling author of multiple fantasy novels, including Dust and Light, Breath and Bone, Flesh and Spirit, The Daemon Prism, The Soul Mirror, and The Spirit Lens. She is a former software engineer. She lives in Colorado with her family.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mysterious and Exciting! Definitely a more intense finale of this duology, with tons more of betrayal, world-building, suspense, and unpredictability. Given how the previous book ended, I wasn't sure how everything would come together. Looking back, this book could almost have been read like a standalone. That said, I still found myself engaged, curious, and wanting to see how everything wrapped up. I was very happy to learn more about the mysterious Danae and the conspiracy within the Registry. There were so many plots unfolding around Lucian/Greenshank that I couldn't tell who was on his side until the scene was over. I was guessing until the very end and didn't see the finale coming, but think it was a fitting end to his character. I almost wish the final battle was a little bit longer, because it was an insane level of suspense and danger. The characters were just as rich and layered as in the previous book, though I was hoping for more Juli and more Bastien. This was a great duology with a lot of mystery, world-building, and unique magic. I'm glad to have read it!

Editorial Reviews

Praise for Ash and Silver"With this masterful opening...the story grabs you by the hand, plunging you headfirst into a world of magic and war, where nothing is quite what it seems...Berg is a brilliant biblioanthropologist, a chronicler for the ages, introducing us to a rich world, sharing with us its history, painting it in words, breathing life and soul into it. The writing very much reminded me of Ursula K. LeGuin."—San Francisco Book ReviewPraise for the novels of Carol Berg: “[A] captivating and satisfying fantasy epic.”—Publishers Weekly   “A tale of magic and politics, of intrigue and betrayal.”—D. B. Jackson, author of the Thieftaker Chronicles “An absolutely gorgeous writer.”—C. E. Murphy, author of the Walker Papers “Altogether superior.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
