While everyone else may be fooled, psychiatrist Leo Liebenstein knows better. His wife is not his wife. She is a dead-ringer—a doppelganger—but something is very wrong. This isn’t Rema. Could it be that his wife is involved in some infidelity? But why would infidelity lead to disappearance? Or false appearance? With nothing for Leo to go on except a potential clue relating to one of his patients, Harvey—a man who believes he is a secret agent with control over the weather—Leo sets off on a humorous and science-steeped odyssey to unravel the mystery of his missing wife and to resolve Harvey’s “conflict with the consensus view of reality.” Moving from New York City to the southern reaches of Patagonia, Atmospheric Disturbances is a brilliantly inventive and addictive adventure, mixed with a scientific exploration of the uncontested truths we know are false.

Rivka Galchen received her MD with a focus in psychiatry from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. She recently completed her master of fine arts at Columbia University, where she was a Robert Bingham Fellow. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Critics say..."Achingly beautiful" ...........NOT!!!! Probably one of the worst and most disjointed books I've read. Kept reading since I thought that any book that got all these accolades must have a strong or surprising ending. Big mistake. Someone should stick to their knitting ......or surgery.....but not on me!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Atmospheric dud I thought I would enjoy the book, but when all you can think of when reading it is what to read next, you know you have a dead weight in your hands. I went back a couple times to re-read parts that bored me, but still the enjoyment only came in waves. The premise seemed interesting enough but I found the novel lacking a plot. I did like the style of writing, even though the scientific blurbs were a little too much when the story itself was going nowhere. Galchen has a knack for transcribing ideas or feelings, which sometimes are so intrinsic one wouldn't give much thought to it, into words in a relatable manner. This was so effectively put to use in the last chapter. I can definitely see why the book has had favourable responses and picked up a few accolades. "Atmospheric Disturbances" just wasn't for me at this point of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice read This is a book that would drive you crazy - so crazy (for me) that I thought if I follow the lunatic character for another moment it could turn me psychotic, but then I was so hypnotized to not be able to put the book down until its completion. Interesting and fun read. I might not have liked the way it portrayed an unconvincingly cold (definitely not compassionate and caring) illogical psychiatrist; I could not resist Rivka Galchen's magic in creativity and story-telling.

Editorial Reviews

"What?s real? Who?s who? Can we believe anything? Hard to say in this story of psychotherapist Leo, who thinks his wife has been replaced by a doppelgänger. Playful, disturbing, heartbreaking."
