Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spellbinding to the End! Autumn, the third movement of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” is the inspiration for the title of this fascinating account of the people of Iqaluit, Nunavut. Martha is enchanted by the old, scratched piano that she inherited from her grandfather, Ohito, when only seven years old. As a teenager, Martha cherishes the old piano and the music that she creates so lovingly. Where will her music take her? Does the piano possess a secret? We learn how the piano was brought by ship to Baffin Island in the 1800’s. A young Scot, Tommy inherits the piano from the old sea captain. Tommy protects and cherishes it his entire life. He eventually passes the piano down to his own son, Ohito. The book tells Tommy’s tale in fascinating flashbacks adding greatly to the enjoyment of the reader. The author’s in depth research is beyond reproach. The vivid descriptions of the landscape bring the cold north to life. Romance, mystery, history and culture all contribute to this excellent tale. Scattered quotes by Antonio Vivaldi, add much to the tone and feel of this novel. Emily Jane Hills Orford’s previous novels, Spring and Summer proceed Autumn. Characters from previous novels, Hope and Melanie, interact with Martha and become important to her blossoming career as she reaches adulthood. Canadian culture and history intrigue this author of several other titles. Ms. Orford is an accomplished author, as well as a musician and art lover. Her passion is very evident in her writing. Highly Recommended by Reviewer: Shirley Roe, Allbooks Review.
