Based on a True Story

by Elizabeth Renzetti

House Of Anansi Press Inc | June 14, 2014 | Trade Paperback

Based on a True Story is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.

A delectable satirical novel about celebrity culture, journalism, truth, lies, consequences - about the fictions we tell ourselves and the fictions we tell others.

Augusta Price (not her real name) is famous in England for playing a slatternly barmaid on a nighttime soap opera and for falling down drunk in public. Now, she has no job, no relationship with her long-lost son, and a sad shortage of tranquilizers - but she has had an improbable hit with her memoir (which is based on a true story, but only very loosely).

But when Frances Bleeker - an insecure and not very successful American tabloid journalist - tells Augusta that a man she once loved has written a book, Augusta becomes terrified that her life story will be revealed as the web of lies it really is. She sets out on a trans-Atlantic journey from London to California to seek revenge on her former lover - a journey that will require the reluctant help of Frances.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looking forward to her next novel. What a wonderful read. The novel is funny, poignant and clever. We care about characters that at first aren't lovable--great debut. I hope Elizabeth is working on a sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lighthearted I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well written, and the characters really draw you in. There was some laughter, and some sad parts... and some very interesting story-lines. But overall I would recommend this to family and friends to read. I did notice with this download though that there seemed to be 2 copies of the book in the file. I'm not sure if it was a glitch or what... but after reading the first 2 chapters (just to be sure it was a duplicate) I noticed it was.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and Engaging This book was fun and engaging - just like your favourite celebrity gossip magazine. It actually left me wanting more so I found the ending abrupt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Debut Novel Good for a debut novel, but you might not want to read this if you are tired or sleepy. You'll end up putting the book down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly fab I just loved Augusta Price in all her badness. True Story is a cautionary tale about our fascination with celebrity and tabloid truth but blah blah blah, this is just a fun, funny, fabulous read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Based on a True Story A wildly funny spin on an aging actresses ongoing addictions battle, with an underlay of sadness. Well written with lol moments.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amusing first novel Captured the British entertainment scene very accurately and caught myself laughing out loud at some of the crazy scenes. Keep up the good work! Congratulations on your column in the Globe and Mail, your humour is appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful read Great book ... Canada's very own Zoe Heller!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Clever! Not the sort of book I normally read and have to say I found it a bit raunchy. Never having met an alcoholic-drug addicted actress, found it hard to relate to Augusta but sympathized with Frances. What a thankless job she had! Still, it was well-written - funny in parts - and great to read about places I have visited.
