The action of the “Basil” story takes place in England in 19th century. Basil is a young aristocrat who grew up in the family country estate. His father Frederic is a tradition adherent. He is convinced that there are some things that people of their class can’t allow themselves. A connection with a woman of a lower class is one of them. Frederic raises his son in fear of disinheritance if Basil will be tempted. But Basil turned to be rebellious and keeps friendship with a commoner man John Mannion. Basil falls in love with a daughter of textile trader – Ms Sherwin with whom he was acquainted by John who saved his life a long time ago with a very mysterious circumstances. Basil marries her and finds out that it was just a part of a huge intrigue...
