New York Times bestselling author Tamora Pierce's long-awaited return to the magical world of Winding Circle - now in paperback.

The drums of war are beating.

Mages Briar, Rosethorn, and Evvy are visiting the mystical mountain kingdom of Gyongxe when they are suddenly called away. The emperor of Yanjing has invited them to see his glorious gardens.

During their brief stay, though, the mages see far more than splendid flowers. They see the emperor's massive army, his intense cruelty, and the devastating magic that keeps his power in place.

It's not till they leave that they discover the emperor is about to launch a major invasion of Gyongxe - home of the First Temple of the Living Circle, a treasure Rosethorn has vowed to defend.

With time running out, the mages race to warn their Gyongxin friends of the emperor's plans.

Duty, mystery, magic, and terror will drive them apart on the way. And while new friends will do their best to bring the mages together again on the field of battle, deadly enemies hide in every mountain pass, just waiting to destroy them.

TAMORA PIERCE is the critically acclaimed author of more than twenty novels, including the Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens quartets, The Will of the Empress, Melting Stones, and, most recently, the New York Times bestselling Beka Cooper trilogy. She lives in New York State with her husband, Tim, and her seven cats and two birds. V...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for me I have not read any of the books involving the characters before. I really found it slow and boring. You did not have to read the other books to understand this. But the ending was awful. Gee, spend the whole time talking about war when SPOILER: the God-King makes his pictures come to life and fight off everyone. Huh? Why didn't he do that in the first place and save lives? Not a very good book.

Read from the Book

From BATTLE MAGIC"What part of 'mage' did you not understand?" asked Briar. He reached into the sling on the ground next to him. Taking out a seed ball, he flipped it to the edge of the firelight closest to the road. It burst, immediately sinking roots into the ground. The vines shot up and out, sprouting long thorns as they grew. By the time they stopped, they were three feet tall, with thick stems forming large curls around one another. Even in the flickering firelight, Parahan could see the four-inch thorns.Fascinated, Parahan walked toward the plant. "You could kill a man with that," he said, his voice cracking."We don't keep them for toys," Briar replied.
