about

A dark fairy tale&nbspabout surviving the human experience"A fairytale where the darkness is only natural: the real world of Beautiful Darkness not only includes but embraces decay, calm indifference, and animals who act like animals, just like life-and death. And neither its prince nor princess are quite what we expect. Read it outdoors for maximum effect." -Kathe Koja, author of&nbsp The Cipher and&nbsp Under the Poppy "A brilliant premise executed with panache-Vehlmann and Kerascoët's fairy world has the offhand cruelty of the Alice books and the offhand sweetness of Moominland-Donahey's Teeny Weenies and The Borrowers can be felt here&nbsptoo-and yet it really seems without precedent, every page a surprise in style and form and content." -John Crowley, author of&nbsp Little, Big and Aegypt Kerascoët's and Fabien Vehlmann's unsettling and gorgeous anti-fairy tale is a searing condemnation of our vast capacity for evil writ tiny. Join Princess Aurora and her friends as they journey to civilization's heart of darkness in a bleak allegory about surviving the human experience.&nbspThe sweet faces and bright leaves of Kerascoët's delicate watercolors serve to highlight the evil that dwells beneath Vehlmann's story as pettiness, greed, and jealousy take over.&nbsp Beautiful Darkness is a harrowing look behind the routine politeness and meaningless kindness of civilized society.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super creepy This book was unsettling and creepy, and I loved it. It was dark and the way its illustrated made it all the more fascinating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a children's book for mean people Dark and twisted, this beautiful graphic novel is compelling and savage underneath a sweet looking exterior. Highly recommended but don't let young kids read this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Twisted and menacing Beneath the cute childlike surface this is an unsettling look at people's selfish and cruel nature. Great for adults but do not give this book to a young child.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful book not for the faint of heart! First things first, definitely do not judge this book by its cute art and characters, this book is definitely only for mature readers or people who are comfortable with gore and stuff. To go on with the review, this is definitely an amazing book! The art is totally whimsical and cute which really offsets the dark themes and events of the story. There isn't much of a plot to the story as it's more of a look at a group of people going through hard times so it may read kind of slow to some readers. Personally, I'm fine with slower stories especially with dark themes such as the ones in this book but some people may find that boring if they expect the typical progression of a narrative. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys creepy/eerie themes.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for Kerascoët"[Kerascoët's] drawings . . . are beyond fantastic, and words can't do them justice anyhow." -John Martz, Drawn "Richly detailed full-color art offers both humor and pathos, creating engaging characters and a strong sense of place." - Library Journal
