A strange imprisonment

Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage.

When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"

Robin McKinley's beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining if slow This story was very entertaining with a lovely romance and fairy tale plot line. I'm a sucker for beautiful romance and fairy tale retelling and this book was reminiscent of another author I love K.M. Shea. I will read more from this author for my sappy romance fixes for sure. My rather large complaint however is that it really lagged and was super slow in the middle and I skipped a bit to get back to the plot. Overall an enjoyable escapist read.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Boring Let me keep this short. If you read this as a child, I believe it is nostalgia that is making you like it now. I read it this year for the first time, as a 19-year-old who was reading every retelling she could get her hands on, and I was thoroughly disappointed. The characters are as flat as the original fairytale version, and the plot was slow. And don't tell me it was boring for me because it wasn't for my age group. I read Ella Enchanted and absolutely fell in love with it. This was just a really dull story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Beauty and the Beast Tale to Date!!! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! It's my favourite version. Do not read "Rose Daughter" by McKinley...was a horrible book compared to this. Though I am still not sure WHY this is put in children's section...I almost want to put it in Aged 12-14. Either or, it's a greta book. I fell in love with it, and it's my List of Top 10 Books that I love!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rereadable Read I read this book when I was a young teenager. I never forgot. In my 20 I tried to purchase this book and could not find it anywhere. I wrote the publisher and they were able to send me a copy. I usually read this book once a year, now that it is in my personel library. I have recommened it to several people and they have also enjoyed it. This is on of those books that you hand down to your children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a BEAUTY!! I am so grateful that has brought me back to this classic story. I read this book many years ago and felt it was the single most fulfilling read ever. I let the book go to "friend" about 14 years ago so that she could also enjoy the story. Since then our friendship has been lost along with my book. I have searched every bookstore and library in Toronto for this particular telling of the story. I am at last reunited!! This heartwarming epic is a time tested treasure! I have and will continue to recommend this book to young and old alike. It will leave all with a warm and fuzzy feeling! Beauty is the girl next door that we all feel like from time to time and Beast is the man of all our dreams. The tale told will leave a longing for all romantic dreamers that can never be fulfilled. Thank you Robin for bringing this classic to our lives!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Ever. This is truly one of the best books I have ever had the priviledge of reading, it gives Romeo and Juliet along with all the other great love stories a real run for their money. Beauty is very well- written and it sets a wonderfully mystical atmosphere that makes the whole story seems as if it could really happen. Truly the best ever!

From Our Editors

Contrary to the name, 16-year-old Beauty is not the prettiest girl in her family. But she is the cleverest, bravest, and most honorable. When her father makes a promise with a beast who lives in an enchanted castle, Beauty fulfills her father's pledge. A marvelous retelling of a favorite love story.
