about

Beauty does not linger, it only visits.
Yet beauty's visitation affects us and invites us into its rhythm,
it calls us to feel, think, and act beautifully in the world:
to create and live a life that awakens the Beautiful.

Beauty is a gentle but urgent call to awaken. Bestselling author John O'Donohueopens our eyes, hearts, and minds to the wonder of our own relationshipwith beauty by exposing the infinity and mystery of its breadth. His wordsreturn us to the dignity of silence, profundity of stillness, power of thought andperception, and the eternal grace and generosity of beauty's presence. In this masterfuland revelatory work, O'Donohue encourages our greater intimacy with beauty andcelebrates it for what it really is: a homecoming of the human spirit. As he focuses on the classical, medieval, and Celtic traditions of art, music, literature, nature, and language, O'Donohue reveals how beauty's invisible embraceinvites us toward new heights of passion and creativity even in these uncertain timesof global conflict and crisis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beauty: The Invisible Embrace I recently discovered Beauty: The Invisible Embrace by John O'Donohue. Upon visiting his website it was sad to realize that John passed away on January 3, 2008 at the age of 52. The Irish Times comments: "With Beauty, John O'Donohue has contributed a major work which is neither philosophy nor theology, neither spiritual nor doctrinal, neither critical nor exhortative but is rather a delighted dance of all these elements. It is the work of a writer finding new space to celebrate old truths." After reading the introduction and first chapter I quickly realized that I was in the presence of a uniquely gifted author. His hope for Beauty was to provide "a book that you might dream into." One of his gifts as a writer was to reveal aspects of spiritual energy that are universal, essential, and eminently practical. His words flow off the page and reach into our experience. Each sentence has a sense of presence and urgency that embraces the reader in self-reflection. A book that invites and encourages us to slow down, pause, reflect, contemplate, reconsider, change within, and grow as human beings are indeed rare in an age infected with desire for speed, consumption, and instantaneous gratification.
