A New York Times Bestseller

Leave it to the heroes to save the world--villains just want to rule the world.

In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed, bestselling authors team up with thirteen influential BookTubers to reimagine fairy tales from the oft-misunderstood villains' points of view.

These fractured, unconventional spins on classics like "Medusa," Sherlock Holmes, and "Jack and the Beanstalk" provide a behind-the-curtain look at villains' acts of vengeance, defiance, and rage--and the pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that spurned them on. No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome I really loved some of the short stories. The thing that really stood out for me though was the comments from booktubers because some were absolutely hilarious

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but Not Great Even though I'm typically not one to read anthologies as I'm not a huge fan of short stories/essays, I picked this one up for a couple of reasons. First, this anthology included some authors that I enjoy in contribution with a lot of the bloggers/"book tubers"/influencers that I watch on YouTube. I was intrigued to see the writing behind some of the personalities that I watch. The second reason I picked this up is because of the concept. I love villains. Weird right? Maybe I don't love them in the moment of reading of their evilness but I love the psychology and background behind their villainous ways. How does a villain become a villain? This whole idea and the novels that are developed based on villain's backgrounds (Heartless, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, Unhooked, etc) truly fascinate me. In fact, if you have any recommendations of novels identifying a familiar villain's background and how they have became evil, leave a comment below! Anyway, back to the review. So like I said, even though I'm not typically a fan of anthologies...I did enjoy this one. Some of the stories I didn't particularly like but I think the majority of them I did. It's hard with an anthology because with a compilation of stories, some may not be as enjoyable or as developed as another so readers are probably going to like some of the stories as well as dislike others. The stories that were most memorable and favourable to me were the Sea Witch story, Medusa's story, and Jack's story of the Giant Beanstalk fame. Overall, I think it was a nice combination of short stories and I did think the contributions from these online influencers were beneficial. I wouldn't rave about this anthology but would recommend it to those like me who look for stories or extra tidbits regarding villain's backgrounds

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Edge of Your Seat Read Some of the stories were better than others, but overall I definitly think it's worth it if you love a good villain origin story, or 13.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth your money. There's 3 good story in the whole book, they are really good and deserved to be read. (Marisa, Adam and Victoria's) Alas, all the rest of them are poor by comparaison and some of them I couldn't even stomach to finish. I was so excited for this one, even got a sample at book con, but it was not worth it at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very interesting read 3.5/5 An anthology of stories about villains. There is a something for everyone. You'll find your favourite authors and discover new ones. Give it a try. The blood on Imuriv: 2/5 I didn't care for this villain. Jack: 4/5 An interesting take on Jake and the Beanstalk. Gwen and art and Lance: 4/5 I enjoyed this modern take on King Arthur. Shirley and Jim: 4/5 I love the idea of a female Sherlock, of her past with Moriarty and the way the story was told. I would gladly read a full length novel set in this world. The blessing of little Wants: 2/5 I wasn't sure who the villain actually is. The Sea Witch: 4.5/5 I loved this story of the sea witch's past before the little mermaid. Beautiful Venom: 3/5 Well written and very descriptive. I'm just not a fan of medusa. Death Knell: 5/5 I really enjoyed this one. It was interesting to read about the personification of death. It was beautifully written. If you're familiar with The Book Thief you'll enjoy this as it has a similar feel. Marigold: 3/5 Interesting. Fantasy combined with the Victorian era. You, You It’s all about You: 3/5 This was interesting. It was completed unexpected. Julian breaks every rule: 3/5 Getting into the mind of a 15 year old boy was interesting. Indigo and Shade: 3/5 A twist on Beauty and the Beast. Sera: 3/5 I liked the writing style but the story didn't captivate me.

"A diverse array of high-profile authors are showcased . . . and the inclusion of the BookTubers is an interesting idea that allows for a range of perspectives. The concept alone is enough to draw readers, so stock up--it's never been so fun to be bad." - Booklist

"An explosively entertaining joy ride of villainous goodness." - Kirkus Reviews

"A pretty wicked collection of wicked deeds." - BCCB
