Bitter and merciless war is coming to the frozen north. It's bloody and dangerous and the Union army, split by politics and hamstrung by incompetence, is utterly unprepared for the slaughter that's coming. Lacking experience, training, and in some cases even weapons the army is scarcely equipped to repel Bethod's scouts, let alone the cream of his forces.

In the heat-ravaged south the Gurkish are massing to assault the city of Dagoska, defended by Inquisitor Glokta. The city is braced for the inevitable defeat and massacre to come, preparations are made to make the Gurkish pay for every inch of land ... but a plot is festering to hand the city to its beseigers without a fight, and the previous Inquisitor of Dagoska vanished without trace. Threatened from within and without the city, Glokta needs answers, and he needs them soon.

And to the east a small band of malefactors travel to the edge of the world to reclaim a device from history - a Seed, hidden for generations - with tremendous destructive potential. A device which could put a end to war, to the army of Eaters in the South, to the invasion of Shanka from the North - but only if it can be found, and only if its power can be controlled ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gritty, but fun I still have no idea who the good guys or the bad guys are, as all the characters are mostly horrible and flawed people, but I am thoroughly invested in every one of them. This is a gritty, violent fantasy novel that has some life lessons to share and some surprising character development. I am definitely going to read the next book in this series!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what I expected I am having such a hard time continuing to read the book. I purchased the first book as some people recommended that it was similar to Games of Thrones series. The first book was not bad to read and had a good ending, but this book is wearing me out. Unfortunately, I don't think I will finish it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh I will start by saying there are far worse books out there. I may have made the mistake of picking up this series immediately after finishing the Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear. Don't do that. This is great for first time fantasy readers, or people who like meaty violent main characters with questionable plot lines. I could not find the characters relate-able nor the plot engrossing and while there is nothing wrong with the writing style its not Patrick Rothfuss, Scott Lynch or Guy Gavriel Kay. Be warned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grimdark Although I enjoyed the world that Abercrombie has created for his First Laws trilogy, the reason this book remains unfinished is that the plot seems to move forward for no stated reason. Characters go on quests to far away places for mysterious people to get an unknown object. I'm not likely to get back into this series but I am open minded to any future books.
