Therefore, we must not be surprised if men of standing and station, who have been trained up in defective principles, have not been able to accept at once the more correct doctrine which has been preached within the last twenty-years; it was scarcely to be expected they should. We must not indeed palliate false doctrine. The sin of heresy and schism will be the same objectively; but subjectively, the guilt cannot be so great in those whose minds have been formed under a wrong tradition. We must give them, we must give ourselves the benefit of the distinction, and view with charity the declension of those in authority, from the exact truth of the Gospel. And we must be longsuffering. It may be a long time before the clouds of error which still obscure the Church shall be dispersed, perhaps we may not live to see it: we must therefore, be patient and enduring, not cry out violently against what we see amiss, but endeavour calmly and dispassionately to maintain the truth: we must be content to bear much misunderstanding, much misrepresentation, many calumnies, and invectives. There may be times when duty shall call on us to speak out boldly and strongly, but we should choose rather, when we can do so with propriety, to sit still, possessing our soul in patience. It is much more worthy of our vocation, more like our great Example, to suffer reproach and be silent, than to be loud and clamorous, and give the reins to our indignation, even though it be roused in the defence of truth. Truth will better be defended by patience and firmness, and the testimony of a calm and quiet spirit, than by violence and excitement.
