In Beware, Pirates!, the debut title in the Canadian Flyer Adventures series, friends Matt and Emily discover the Canadian Flyer, a magical time-traveling sled, in Emily’s attic. The magic sled transports them back to the year 1577 where they find themselves aboard Martin Frobisher’s ship, The Aid. Adventure beckons, and Emily and Matt are happy to follow. Until, that is, they encounter a crew of pirates! Author Frieda Wishinsky weaves well-researched and accurate historical facts into her compelling, kid-friendly storytelling, while Dean Griffith’s evocative illustrations situate readers perfectly in place and time. At the end of their adventure, Emily and Matt share additional facts about pirate ships, Nunavut, and Martin Frobisher, and Wishinsky gives additional facts here too, in an informative Q&A format.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love them! So glad I found this series! My almost-8-year-old son absolutely loves them! He's always liked books and reading but was never really interested in chapter books... until I bought him the first book in the series. Now he's hooked and keeps asking me if we can get them all and when! I really like that they give them a little Canadian history too! I just wish I had known about this series sooner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from On the edge of your seat! I bought this for my 6.5 yr old for Valentine's Day. He isn't reading yet as we support delayed reading. Anyhow we picked it up from our mailbox on the way to town. I read it to him while waiting for the ferry. He begged me to read it on the short ferry crossing, when we parked at the store in town and the same on the return ferry. He had to be patient until bedtime at which point we finished it. He found it absolutely riveting, heck so did- i got goosebumps I LOL I was ad avid adventure reader when I was a kid so this sings to me too! and now he wants to get more, now!!! He can't stop talking about it. I love the way she is able to get acurate facts into the story so he doesn't think it's 'bookwork'. I found the writing to be superior to the 'easy reader' books and a step down from adult, so very easy to comprehend and relate to. Obviously I feel the fact that there are 2 adventurers - both a boy and a girl make this an ideal book for both of my children to relate to!! The only complaint I have would be it's too short at only 66 pages (the rest - pages 67-83is the supposed 'interesting facts' that took up the back of the book) These were of absolutely no interest to my son- it would have been better to have more story, especially at $7 a book. Otherwise, I will wait until we read the 2nd one to see if it compares to this excellent book.
