Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will LOVE this book, written by a 14year old author! Beyond the Waterfall author Eryn Flynn Mascot Books review by Dawne McFarlane Meet Kyla Marine from planet Aquarius, where water is everything to the humans who live there. The colour blue is sacred, and daring teenagers like Kyla travel the waterways by paddleboard. The only schools are boarding schools, and challenging authority is necessary and important. This wondrous world of water is under attack. Kyla plunges into the struggle for the future of the planet she loves, trusting an ancient sacred legend to light her way. Light her way it does, with all the power and beauty of the magnificent waterfall at the heart of the legend. But this ancient wisdom is not enough. Something from the present is needed, from Kyla. Heart wisdom. The truth of the love she knows deep within. Love that others may challenge- to the death. The meeting of heart wisdom from past and present means everything for the future. Eryn Flynn gives us a generous glimpse into Kyla's heart, and so her own. She knows the power of sacred story in her life and in her writing, and the importance of making it authentically her own. Prose poetry dances on the page alongside teenage fashion banter; even in life-and-death-struggles there are good and bad hair days! The dialogue between characters is authentic, particularly as Eryn is close to the age of her characters. Writing with insight and a sense of language beyond her years, Eryn writes from her own adolescent point of view. May the purity of her wonder remain as she matures personally and as a writer. In stories that span the globe and the ages, the human struggle between light and dark, within and without, is illuminated by the power of love. Love is the light in the darkness. Love that challenges, discerns, forgives, redeems, transcends. This young author knows that love for the planet is bound with love for each other. She knows it in her imagination in creating the world of Aquarius. She knows it in the challenges her heroine must face. She knows it in the stewardship that must be vigilant even in victory. This is the challenge of her generation. To imagine and know the life giving power of water- and earth and air and fire, the elements that give us life- and to love it with a love that is more powerful than weaponry, anger, or revenge. This love requires a stewardship of devotion. That is the hope for the future. And that is the essence of this book. Eryn's confidence in her own authentic voice is indeed hope for the future of imagining the healing of our world.
