Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FOR passionate book lovers, BY a passionate book lover. In grade school, I volunteered to work in the library—anything to get closer to the books I loved, and first dibs on new arrivals. Flash forward several decades, I’m still an avid book reader/lover/buyer/owner and have multiple library cards in regular rotation. I know there are others like me, if not more fanatical….and this book is for my kind of people. One of those people is the very creative illustrator and self-described sometime writer, Jane Mount. "Bibliophile - An Illustrated Miscellany" is her densely and delightfully illustrated 2nd book about books (the first being “My Ideal Bookshelf”), sharing in bite-sized chunks that intense love of our favourite rectangular thing. It’s a subject that I’m glad someone made for a reading audience used to mass-market book promotion or online bookstores vs. the tangibility of a retail store or library. This is more intimate and personal, lending quotes or recommendations by everyday people who read voraciously, while encouraging new literary discoveries. It highlights special books in various genres, sharing lovely snippets about the people who wrote them or stories behind the making of classic writings. Also covered are features on book cover design, a book construction infographic, quizzes matching food with their written counterparts and impressively unique bookstores to visit worldwide. Hundreds of beautifully rendered book cover and author illustrations steer the book itself as a form of visual art and a celebration of conceptual design. It’s the kind of book one reads in pauses, in order to make additions to their growing "TO READ" list. While digital technologies have emerged to make e-books and reading more portable, the discovery of new stories, literature and innovations to adorn the physical book has not diminished. If anything, its importance has become more valuable, maintaining that provocative lure of a captivating tale, or to lifelong learners thirsty for knowledge and truth. Recommended reading that’s hard to put down, and perfect for the curious!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Gorgeous Book! Every page in this book is a treasure! From the beautiful illustrations, book lists, stories about authors, bookstores, bookstore pets and more it feels like each page is a gift. There are even a few quiz pages to test you at a bibliophile. I bought one for myself and another for a gift. Indeed, if you have a book lover, writer, or teacher on your gift list, this is a great option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Treasure A must-have for anyone who loves books!! I got this a couple of months ago and I’m not surprised to see it on the “Picks” list for Christmas. I love illustrations and there are tons in this book. Although this is a US-published book there are many global shoutouts to bookstores around the world, including several in Canada.
