A half century ago, a shocking Washington Post headline claimed that the world began in five cataclysmic minutes rather than having existed for all time; a skeptical scientist dubbed the maverick theory the Big Bang. In this amazingly comprehensible history of the universe, Simon Singh decodes the mystery behind the Big Bang theory, lading us through the development of one of the most extraordinary, important, and awe-inspiring theories in science.

Simon Singh received his Ph.D. in particle physics from the University of Cambridge. A former BBC producer, he directed the BAFTA Award-winning documentary film Fermat’s Last Theorem and wrote Fermat’s Enigma, the best-selling book on the same subject. Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great survey of something everyone knows but nobody really understand Like his Code Book, Singh deciphers what some popular physics authors seem to only make more cryptic, and has given us a broad but discerning aperçu of one of the most known but least truly understood phenomenons in our universe's history. Accessible and Enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read like a novel! Couldn't put the book down. The book kept me riveted from the first page. I had a hard time putting the book down. I don't need to say a lot other than the book was fantastic. Mr. Singh was able to write his factual "story" in an easy to read manner. If you are looking for a factual and informative easy read (although it was 493 pages yet the pages went by at the speed of light). then this is the book for you. If you are looking for a lengthy and detailed scientific essay of what happened in the first 5 minutes, then this is not the book for you. It takes you through the evidence that was discovered, either by accident or on purpose, which convincingly verified how the universe, or rather space and time, began. Highly recommended.
