Billy Joel is an American singer and songwriter. Love of all things musical drove him to join his first band, The Echoes, while only 14. Billy Joel went solo in 1972 and received his first recording contract that year from Paramount Records.


He moved on to Columbia Records in 1973 and scored his first big Top 20 hit in 1975 with "Piano Man." Heavily influenced by The Beatles, Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, The Rolling Stones and others Joel continued to write his own songs and record them for Columbia Records. And more big hits followed: "She's Always a Woman" (1978; "Just the Way You Are (1979), a song that won Record of the Year Honors.
