The workshop was held as part of the program of activities of the NATO Special Program on Chaos, Order, and Patterns, which is represented by a number of volumes in this series. The main topics discussed: macromolecules--in particular, proteins and nucleic acids; membranes; cellular structures (other than membranes); networks; morphogenesis; and dynamical systems--especially evolutionary models. The introduction of new concepts arising from condensed matter physics to complex hypermolecular systems has great potential; the task is difficult both because of the intrinsic difficulty of the problems concerned and also because of the present organization of science which leans toward parcelization of the physics of complex systems into subdomains (thus interdisciplinary conferences such as this one are vital).
