For eighteen years Fran Benedetto kept her secret, hid her bruises. She stayed with Bobby because she wanted her son to have a father, and because, in spite of everything, she loved him. Then one night, when she saw the look on her ten-year-old son’s face, Fran finally made a choice—and ran for both their lives.
Now she is starting over in a city far from home, far from Bobby. In this place she uses a name that isn’t hers, watches over her son, and tries to forget. For the woman who now calls herself Beth, every day is a chance to heal, to put together the pieces of her shattered self. And every day she waits for Bobby to catch up to her. Bobby always said he would never let her go, and despite the ingenuity of her escape, Fran Benedetto is certain of one thing: It is only a matter of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well written This story is the most anxiety-inducing one I’ve picked up in a long time. You will be stunned by the physical and mental abuse that Fran Benedetto has endured for almost two decades. The emotional breakdown that it causes her, the acute loneliness she experiences and the stripping of her dignity and self respect will have you reaching for that tissue. This story gives insight into the life of a battered woman and all the emotional and psychological disturbances it gives rise to. Not for the faint of heart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really liked it This gave me a different perspective on domestic violence. We often do not think of how lives are disrupted and the difficulties in starting over. Those of us on the outside think that you just leave and get on with your life but this novel deals with the hardships faced in giving everything up - your life's work and identity. Nevertheless leaving is a much better option than staying in an abusive relationship and risking the loss of life.
