HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.'We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.'When his beloved owners are forced to sell him, Black Beauty leaves his life as a young, carefree colt and embarks on a working life of misery, pulling cabs in London. As he passes through the hands of a number of different masters, he faces cruelty and hardship, as well as compassion and kindness, as he struggles to survive.Through her poignant but heart-warming tale, Anna Sewell highlights the plight of the working animal. First published in 1877, this story of a horse whose spirit cannot be broken has become an enduring and popular children's classic.
Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in Norfolk. Through persistent difficulties with her health, Sewell wrote the classic children's novel Black Beauty, which has been credited with drawing widespread attention to animal cruelty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very fine classic This book is definitely a must read for all ages! If a horse could write a book, I think they would agree with everything Ms. Sewell has to say.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic! One of my favorite books as a child, and I still love it to this day! At times it's gritty and realistic, but it's not a depressing book by any means... it has its happy moments, too, and all through the story you're rooting for Black Beauty to find the type of home he started out with, one that will love him and treat him with the respect and dignity he deserves. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good heartwrenching, heart-warming classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful story I pretty much loved all the books I read as a child from the perspective of an animal, but this stands out in particular alongside Jack London's Call of the Wild as my favourites. A tale that makes you feel so much compassion and teaches children more about the world around them than they could pick up from any nonfiction book. A fantastic read for children and adults alike.
