When Ivy met Rachel, the result wasn’t exactly love at first sight. Sparks flew as the living vampire and the stubborn witch learned what it meant to be partners. Now Kim Harrison, the acclaimed author of Pale Demon and Black Magic Sanction, turns back the clock to tell the tale—in an original full-color graphic novel.

Hot-as-hell, tough-as-nails detective Ivy Tamwood has been demoted from homicide down to lowly street-crime detail. As if rousting trolls and policing pixies instead of catching killers wasn’t bad enough, she’s also been saddled with a newbie partner who’s an earth witch. It’s enough to make any living vampire bare her fangs. But when a coven of murderous witches begins preying on werewolves, Rachel Morgan quickly proves she’s a good witch who knows how to be a badass.

Together, Ivy and Rachel hit the mean streets to deal swift justice to the evil element among Cincinnati’s supernatural set. But there’s more to their partnership than they realize—and more blood and black magic in their future than they bargained for.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good introduction to the series This was a fun way to get up to speed on a series that I have been wanting to read. Years ago I read Black Magic Sanction, the eighth book in series and loved the characters. Later I read a short story in the anthology Unbound which contained a story The Hollows 7.5. Since then, I have collected a few of the books, but not found the time to start reading. Ivy Tamwood is a vampire who works for the IS, Inderland Security which police the non-humans of Cincinnati. She has been demoted to street crimes and assigned a new partner. Rachel Morgan is a witch and is still in her probationary period. Some how these two have to overcome their differences and find a way to work together; their very lives may depend on it. It's been so long since I have read a book in this series, that I had no pre-conception of how Ivy and Rachel would look. They are both rather well endowed, but that does seem to be a feature of graphic novels. Other than that, I like what I saw both in characters and setting. There was enough details to flesh out the story without so many that I was distracted from the plot. This is a short tale and is well suited to a graphic presentation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it when caracters are brought to life... Blood Ties is the first graphic novel adaptation of a Hollows short story, that to my knowledge has never before seen the light of day. This can essentially be seen as the prequel to Dead Witch Walking, as it deals with Rachael first being paired with Ivy before Jenks and their first job together investigating suspected black magic users. I loved it. It's always so great when characters you've read about on paper are brought to life with pen and ink, and even better when its done well, which is just what happened here. I've seen 3 of my series make the jump from book to graphic novel and I have yet to be disappointed. Greatly recommended for all Hollows fans.
