Back by popular demand! Thousands of requests on the Internet for second-hand copies of what has become a collector’s item since its publication in the 1980s have dictated a re-edition of Boererate – Danie Smuts’s compilation of old-fashioned medical remedies traditionally used by Afrikaners (Boere). The origins of these Boererate are not perfectly clear, but they are believed to stem from hearsay, observation, experience, myth, religion and even magic. Treatment often requires the performance of hilarious rituals to cure ailments. This collection of quirky traditional remedies recalls an almost forgotten era of Afrikaner heritage. For example, the following steps are recommended to cure flu: 1.) Put a bottle of whisky and a glass at the side of your bed and light a candle next to them. 2.) Then get into bed, making sure there are plenty of blankets, and gradually start to drink the whisky. 3.) When you see two candles, put the glass down, put the top on the whisky bottle, blow both candles out and go to sleep. A warning accompanies the treatment: “This is guaranteed to get rid of flu in twenty-four hours, but you might have a headache.”This publication provides for the Afrikaans market’s distinctive interest in popular cultural history.
