From Our Editors

Junior Booklover Contest Winner Riley, 13 from Calgary, ABComic book writer/illustrator/inker Jeff Smith has returned with full-color editions of his popular series, Bone. The original publications had (and still have) an immense cult following, and are being re-released towards the family market. The following review is of the first book in the series, Out From Boneville.Out From Boneville follows the adventures of Fone Bone, a small white creature who is madly in love with his human friend Thorn. After Fone Bone loses his cousins Smiley and Phoney, he gets lost in a valley, where the harsh winter forces him to take shelter with Thorn and her grandmother. Meanwhile, a conspiracy by the large, furry rat creatures to capture Phoney goes bad and Fone is put in grave danger. As Out From Boneville is the first graphic novel in a series of nine, a small number of questions are left unanswered, providing even more incentive to read the rest of the series. The art in the Bone series is truly amazing. The human characters are extremely well done and detailed, while the simplistic style of the Bones seems to suit them perfectly. The background scenery that Smith has designed is perfect for the story, and his objects and characters are very original, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny (namely Ted the bug's big brother). Needless to say, there is enough seriousness in the book (especially in the second half) to keep the story going, and what a creative and innovative tale it is! Cows, a pie, a rat-creature-killing old lady, a laid back dragon, and a swarm of locusts are all important parts of the storyline. It is completely goofy, and yet at the same time, so very clever. Fone Bone and his pals share the same aura of greatness as many have before them, such as Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield. Out From Boneville will likely not appeal to those who don't enjoy comic books, but for everyone else, it's an enchanting adventure chock full of lovable characters and impressive art, and will not disappoint.
