This short story is set during the 1950s-1960s in South Africa when influx control laws were used to restrict the flow of country people seeking work in the cities. We follow the life of Dumisa Ndlovu, a migrant worker. Under the laws of the day, wives and children of migrant workers were not allowed to accompany their husbands to the cities. This had a devastating effect on family life. Dumisa lives in the big city and his wife lives in the countryside and due to the prolonged separation, his wife is unfaithful. Dumisa wishes to divorce her. Only he wants his lobola returned so that he can marry a second time. His affairs become complicated when the family of the young woman he wishes to marry put a curse on him in the form of the tokoloshe, or evil dwarf.
